My CSM signed me up as a utility clerk in addition to my courtesy clerk responsibilities without me being told before
Permalink

Hello everyone,

I was recently signed up to be a utility clerk by my customer service manager without being asked. I'm normally a courtesy clerk and have been for as long as I have worked there. However, I prefer not to be in utilities but I'm not sure if I should talk to my CSM about that. She said she was sorry for signing me up for it but she didn't have enough utility clerks. However, I know we have quite a few clerks in that position so that doesn't make much sense to me. I thought about talking to her about my job role but I'm not sure how well that would go. Any advice?

-Thanks

Utility Clerk is just Cleaning? Do you not do basic cleaning as a bagger? I know normally the Utility Clerks are the more trusted FE Associates that do not need 100% Supervision!

OP here,

Yes, courtesy clerks pick up trash off carts, keep the front end tidy, and they clean the belts/registers. That's all fine and well but becoming a utility clerk was unexpected to say the least. However, I have been told that utility responsibilities are also tied to courtesy clerk responsibilities but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Odd. We are only allowed one utility clerk per a store. And they get raises unlike the cc.

My current KMA, "Utility" is "Cleaning", which is apart of the FE- Bagger Classification. Depending on the associates and MGMT's view of their work, they might get reclassified as a Front End Clerk to get them more $$$

The Csm might be trying to use hours from the UC position to keep the front end staffed.

A utility clerk here makes 30 cents more than a Courtesy clerk after enough time has passed(2 years).  A CC only gets one raise.

Per our contract, a UC can be assigned to do everything a CC does.  But, they are also allowed to change baler if old enough, use power jacks if old enough, paint, clean frozen and dairy glass, stock Drug GM seasonal aisle, clean produce green racks, assemble BBQ pits and outdoor tables, etc.

30 cents more? that's all? See tons more work to do for seriously crappy pay. I don't blame you your not wanting you be uc. Get out of it f you can.

Work and work ethic is a good thing.

The UC doesn't have to worry about when they get to take their breaks.  The UC isn't micro managed as far as I have seen.  But, they have to at least look busy and keep a steady work pace.  They also are able to mingle with all the associates thru out the store and not stuck staring the same front end peeps.

If the UC can impress a Department Manager, they will have a better opportunity then a CC to be promoted into a department.

Our only UC actually made it into a Kroger tv video....

Not true at the Kroger stores I've worked at. I see regular cc get promoted by talking to the right people. The uc's are usually lifers who will never get promoted for various reasons.

In my division before Krog took over, we only have UCs so a UC would do all Utility and CC work. Now under Krog, we are reclassified as CCs???? Makes no fricking sense as we are classified in the computer as utility / front end clerk

In my store, UCs do all CC work, plus store n outside trash / recycling, spill response / cleanup, called for price checks sometimes, liquor opening n closing, and also can be selected to be a FE Team Member when necessary (assists CSR / Supervisor with delegated tasks for a situation i.e power failure, etc.) I am trained on doing the baler and one of our UCs is trained on our floor scrubber (mostly floor scrubber is mainly store management an a very few select store personnel only because it is considered powered machinery, so no one under 18 / without training n certification. I'm one of the few people in Utility who carry a box cutter since I mainly always end up with paper n plastic at night for restock n sometimes will have to slice it open if it comes off the truck after I drop it where it's supposed to go / open it upfront. Also not allowed for anyone under 18 to use a cutter either.)

I even used to be able to do liqour checks, but apparently in my store we can't anymore without being register trained (which i find hilarious as most of the people who are trusted to scan are over 21, so they are well above n know what to do n how to handle it. Not anymore. But a different store in my region lets UCs still do it. Weird. Oh well)

OP here again,

This week I'm just a courtesy clerk but my assistant CSM wrote the schedule that way, not my CSM. Hopefully I remain as a courtesy clerk but we'll see next week and beyond I guess. I know the best UC at my store did a good job of showing me the ropes and he's told me he prefers working with me.

What division are you in? In ATL theres not really a distinction, when hired we get c clerks or cashiers. C clerks get assigned either cleaning, carts, go backs. it can vary with the day and who fills out the duty list. Yeah we get utility hours and c clerk hours but lots of stores dont get enough people certain times of the day to not mix duties.
