How late have you been scheduled to work in the deli bakery? I just ask because I've seen my schedule for the week of Thanksgiving and the only saving grace is that I don't have to work the holiday. HOWEVER, all week I'm closing. But not just your standard 2 to 10 p.m. I have 3 days of 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Don't get me wrong, I'm always grateful to always get my 40 hours in and I know they can schedule you however they please. And I should be thankful for the hours for the holidays and all that. But at the same time, I have NEVER worked til 11 p.m. EVER! Hadn't even realized they could/would schedule folks in the deli for that long til one of our newest co-workers came in and her schedule is 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., but she admitted that was due to to her working another job during the day.

Which I personally no longer have a second job, so all I can think is that unless the new person can't work that week herself. Then what is going on with me being scheduled that late for? Most especially as we have more than enough people in deli to get EVERYTHING done even BEFORE 10 p.m. So to wait til 11 feels like I'll be in detention or something with nothing to really do(unless they figure by scheduling me that late I can help the bakery closer that week, mind you I don't get much help unless I get it from deli when I have to close down there. Just an observation).

I don't work in the deli or bakery, but having worked for Kroger for over six years now, I can tell you this...

Literally almost every department is going to have a somewhat different schedule the week of a major holiday like Thanksgiving. That's because the shopping needs of the average customer will change during that week. Not only will you see more customers in the store, but also customers making multiple trips, and customers coming in later during the evening, too. So, both the deli and bakery will be busier than normal and will be busier later than normal, too. The normal "closing time" for the deli and bakery will likely be pushed back to a later time.

Believe me, regardless of how many people that are working in your deli right now, there isn't going to be "more than enough people to get everything done" during Thanksgiving week.

Oh, and the bad thing about not working the day of the holiday is while you will still get holiday pay, you won't get the holiday premium pay which you only get for working on the day of the holiday itself (and honestly, working Thanksgiving Day is much, much easier than working the day before Thanksgiving, or even the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day, next to Black Friday, is one of the easiest days to work out of the year at Kroger).

It could be as the poster says - more shoppers and more into the late evening.

But you should check with your DH. Sometimes they have to schedule you based on what the computer says, but they actually want you to work different hours.

I'm the head baker now, but before that, I used to work every Wednesday night before Thanksgiving.  All I did was fill shellves and tables.   As soon as I finished putting everything out, it was time to start over.  I actually didn't mind it

I hear what your saying and it does make sense for a holiday week(albeit the fact I've worked enough holidays thus far for Kroger, that I don't really mind missing the premium for Thanksgiving. Just let me enjoy my turkey coma in peace, lol).

But I think too, they might have me doing split coverage again. Seeing as how we lost our back up decorator person just earlier in the week. And without her, they'll still need some coverage as three of our bakery folks are under a restricted-ish schedule as they are in college(even though one is taking this semester off and could be ON some of the days I've been covering for her...). But yea, for our deli there is usually 3 or 4 closers to bakery's 1. So I can see for that week alone they would most likely have me down there the majority of the time helping with the stuffing and so forth so the closer can get out on time(albeit, I don't get much help when *I* close unless I ask some peeps I know in deli to lend a hand).

Bottom line and all I know is that is going to be a heaven and hell week. Happy to make the cash, but my body is going to be thrown into something with different working hours and my back still being on the mend.

I wish they would schedule me from 3-11. I would actually have time to get everything done then. We're scheduled til 10 and that is when we close. Kroger doesn't allow overtime, so I don't get everything done. I always have something that is unfinished or have to clock out to finish.

This is the story of my bakery life^. However since been given the talking to about no clocking out and still working. I haven't done that aspect of things. Although last Wednesday I got out at 11-ish. Simply because they told me about an ICED sugar cookie order(calling for 6 dozen), stuffing had to be bagged, had to package and label a bunch of cookies and fruit bites etc. In addition to the regular closing stuff.

Sure, I had help from some of my deli peeps. However, what they missed or told me not to worry about. I still went back and covered it. Cause I knew they would have witched like nobody's biz about it the next day. Not to mention they have this new thing now where one of the managers was talking about low night stock or something. And so they are going around taking pictures of your sales floor. If they don't approve they give the whole department a talking to about it. So that also got me going over as well.

So yea, although bakery in my store technically closes at 8, you can usually find me going over more often than not. Be a world of difference if we had an actual afternoon crew to knock out the afternoon stuff and it would be all good. Or as we don't have that work more as a team with what few peeps we have(even fewer as the new chick has done too many early leaves and call offs/hanging up on phone calls when people are looking for her) to keep things on track. But I swear some days it's like "I'm getting mine, you better hope you can get yours'". So annoying.

And at least in deli it is more of a team effort down there. Cause we close at 9 over there. But pending on who is on, if they stick to what times we can cover the salads, do markdowns, etc. We can pretty much be done with everything well before 10(hence, that is even more so why being scheduled next week 3 to 11 is such a bummer. I get the previous poster mentioned cause of the holidays and same with my back up deli manager as well. But still...I feel like this is just another way for them to be like "well we scheduled her for that before, we can do it again". Which sometimes is their thinking about things at times. And I'd hate for them to pull this sort of thing come Christmas time too. Especially with the roads all icy and slick. Definitely not safe being out that late and to do it back to back nights in a row? Oh boy.

Day before thanksgiving is definitely going to be interesting. .. You will be filling the floor literally all day. As soon as you fill up your kings Hawaiian rolls, you'll turn around and they'll be gone again.

We're getting hit with that now. I really hope they don't pull me off deli just to fill that though. >_< And that these 3 to 11 hours go much more quickly.
