At our store at least, heck no! Thats a perk of being senior, you pick and choose your shifts. Weve got a self check out attendant who works Monday to Friday 7 to 3:30, and thats it, and a cashier with pretty much the same shift. The only people who have to work a late shift are department heads and backups.
If they are full time they can be required to close. Depends on the contract. In Local 1996, ATL division, hours after 6pm are to rotate among the full timers. Full time have no availabilty restrictions.
At our store, SCO is separated. SCO attendant is it's own classification with it's own schedule. Attendants may or may not be able to choose cashier shifts. SCO schedule slots are fixed shifts of 6:00 AM to noon, noon to 6:00 pm, and 6:00 pm to midnight. Theoretically, one gets to pick their schedule in order of seniority. That is, unless management just says **** it and schedules you a couple months of 6 day closing shifts just for the hell of it, like they did for me. I'm second in SCO seniority, so that was some real bull.
Availability restrictions are generally ignored and are a major factor in our high turnover rate.
If your seniority is high, and management is competent and likes you, theoretically you won't have to work late. That's still awfully risky.
