So this morning I called into work to let a manager know I wouldn't be able to make it in because a family member was in a bad car wreck. I'm the only family they have in the state & they stay nearly 4 hours away from me. I told my manager this & he flat out said he doesn't care come into work I try to explain the situation but all he said was come in or you won't be working anymore. This is the second time I have been threatened with being fried by this manager & I don't know why.
Most contracts have steps for attendance write-ups. Not sure how your contract is.
Verbal warning, written warning, last written warning, 3 day suspension(final warning) then after that, you are hanging in by a thread.
Call ins, No call, No show and tardy count differently also.
If they try to terminate you and you have not been suspended previously, call your union rep asap. Do not sign anything or the union can't help you much. You can refuse to sign any write-up no matter what level.
The only thing they can do is schedule you miserable hours or give you miserable tasks. Don't tell anyone what you don't like to do. It might bite you later.

Family comes first. Get the doctor attending your family member to write a doctors note that states the situation and that you are the care taker. Done that a few times. If it's in writing management can't bitch about it.
I've actually had a store manager tell me "Family comes first" when I needed to take care of a personal family issue and I really appreciated that this manager said that, because it is 100% true! I can say that I am grateful for the ones who have listened to me during difficult situations...Too bad there aren't more like that, though...You know that if it was their own family, they would put family first! Why should it be any different for the employees?
