There's something seriously wrong with this company. I've worked here 6 months and now I've worked through a tropical depression and snow storm that has shut my city down. I work 20 minutes away and am expected to go on black ice for retail hours. Again in dangerous conditions. I nearly spun out 3 times on my home last night and I'm not allowed to call in. This job ain't worth my health.
"Hey I'd love to come in today, but I almost crashed my car due to unsafe hazardous conditions last time, so unless someone can give me a ride to and from home, I can't. Sorry!"
Also this is where unions should actually do their job but Kroger union sucks so...

Pretty much my assessment of the union, even if I'm a part of it. This is my only job right now so I need some kind of security and it's the only boundary I have in a right-to-work state. I've also worked when my sugars were low enough I had to look out one eye. Because they don't schedule us enough hours in the department and we can't afford to fall behind. If we do, the pressure is ten-fold. Inclement weather doesn't stop us from taking orders out all day, walking in parking lots without any salting. So it's a hazard at every turn.
It really does come down to the management at each individual store. Some store managers/co-managers are pretty reasonable and will understand if you don't feel it's safe to navigate wintry roads. Others will want you to risk life and limb no matter how bad the weather is.
One store I was at, I called in two days, back to back, because my assessment was it wasn't safe to drive to work as we had just been hit with a bad snow storm plus lots of ice. It wasn't an issue. Another store I was at, I called in once due to bad weather, and again, no arguments or problems.
It's just luck of the draw. You either get fairly decent management at your store or really cruddy management.
I wish my store had management that gave a crap about employee safety in this kind of weather. Driving through a tropical storm with enough force to keep my electricity off for 5 days was enough. And my department wasn't deemed safe enough (Clicklist) but they still made us come into the store.
