Yesterday a customer of mine Did not want to input her pin number when paying with her debit card.
She wanted to use her debit card as a credit card.
Since the credit card reader beeped when she tried to use her debit card as a credit card, I told her that her debit card Has a pin number that she has to use.
I also told her that there is No way around that.
That is when she told me the following...

No they cannot all programming is done from Cincinnati and has to go through a approval process. I am POS cordanitor for the Columbus division
Chip and Pin was introduced to provide an added security feature, you have to have the card and a pin number to use the card. Customers were instructed by banks to always use it as Credit, because of the credit card surcharges that retailers paid the credit card companies (banks also received a %). Visa sued Kroger,Walmart and other retailer because they were losing money since retailers reprogrammed the pin pads to bypass Visa's processing services. Mastercard I'm guessing is all about added security. What happens when someone credit card is stolen and they come into the store it was used!? They flip out because you didn't "card the customers", Chip and Pin is added security for both customer and retailer. European Credit Card require Pin #'s, signatures are so old school.

Ohhhh, so that explains why Visa debit cards can still be run as credit. I've had that question in my mind for months. It makes sense now, why it's only Mastercard and not both.
When the customer reaches the screen that asks for the pin, they can push the green circle/Enter button to run their card as credit, bypassing the need to enter a pin but making it so they can't get cash back.

That is what the customer did, but the machine beeped, which indicated that she had to enter her pin number.
