Parking in Fire Lanes to use RedBox
Permalink

For the safety of courtesy clerks, for the safety of customers, please speak up when people block the firelane to use the Redbox.
As a consumer I exit the store and if a large SUV is parked right by the store entry, it impairs the vision on other drivers. Once I was exiting, carrying several two-liters of soda. A car was blocked by a car using the firelane to park and use the RedBox.   The car went around the blocked lane, and was blind to oncoming pedestrian traffic.  I was struck by the vehicle.  I leaned into the car, so only got bruises, but my grocery bags were shreadded and drinks rolled across the parking lot.   The driver apologized, but I pointed it the cause was the driver in the firelane.  The redbox user heard my comments and replied with two words (first word was an expletive and the other was "you").   On future visits I discussed the issue with the shift manager, who was indifferent, as a matter of fact one shift manager said it was perfectly legal to do that.

So I made multiple calls to Kroger's regional office and got transferred to voice mail black holes, and only a local front-desk rep acknowledged the issue.

So, I contacted the building owners who lease to Kroger and said contacting them was more appropriate than contacting police , because a policeman sitting in a parking lot might be a deterrent for some shoppers.

About a week later I did get a response from Kroger's district office.....  I heard the beeping in the background before the call began, so that suggested the call was being recorded.   I was firmly and repeated told to make a statement that I would never make such calls again.  My reply was "I'm only looking out for the safety of the Kroger staff and patrons", and "it would be terrible if someone were struck and injured or killed, so that was the purpose for my follow-up" (that could be a family or neighbor that gets injured or killed).

About 10 days later I returned to the Kroger location (3455 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Duluth, GA 30096) and discovered another Red-Box was installed, directly on the other side of the store entrance.  This creates blindness on both sides of the customer's one entrance to the facility, and sure as sunset as I exited the store, both sides were blocked by people using the firelane to use the RedBox.

So I approached Rebox, gave them the street address of the locations, and told them of the safety risk.  They did not disclose the operator's name, but did give me the address of the box operator (who gets 25c / day per rental) .    I don't want any gains , I just want a safe place to purchase groceries. and it's apparent that someone at the Kroger district office has other plans.

Thank you for bringing this to Krogers attention.  I have been almost hit a few times walking outside grabing carts  because someone was in our fire lane at the redbox.

someone needs to happen..

wow scary.  I'm glad you are ok, but I have some questions.  Did you ever contact police?  I can't believe nobody took the story serious, I mean, it sounds like it could be a lawsuit.  People park in our fire lane ALL THE TIME.  I do it too :/  Never realized it was a hazard to customers.  I will add that we have stop signs at both sides of the entrance/exit to the store so drivers are expected to stop and look for pedestrians--vehicles parked in the fire lane aren't really blocking sight if the other drivers stop like they're supposed to (my store's parking/driving situation could be different from yours).  Hope you get some satisfaction.  Good luck!

Meanwhile, Krogrr associates are blocking fire exits, sometimes inside and out.

If there isn't a bonus metric for it, management does not care.

Management will care if/when OSHA comes in there and fines the hell out of them for that.

If I contact the local jurisdiction police, then they will patrol the parking lot.  The local police dept. is overstaffed, so to justify their existence they are apt to patrol the parking lot, and write gratuitous amounts of tickets to people violating the rule.  Then local residents will resent the over-patrolling for the police, and will make other choices when choosing a grocery store.

Less customers = less income for the store.  Less store income = staff layoffs.

Now I do NOT want to see ... good hard working Kroger staff downsized while some district supervisor is pocketing the proceeds from Redbox.
