I think I read this here a couple of times but I didn't understand it. Can someone explain to me why Kroger doesn't like to give full time status? Is it because they don't have to give you benefits?
The cost of benefits is the biggest reason, but before the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, FT status was easier to get for associates. I wouldn't completely say the company wants no FT associates, but would say they thought with PPACA the cost would skyrocket (It was actually easier to get FT status before PPACA was enacted). Everything in business is associated with a cost, but in the long run your either paying it in the front end or back end. Personally, I would say have 2 different pay scales, pay PT people more and limit hours and benefits or pay FT less and provide benefits (Cost would be neutral). Before PPACA I always make sure my great associates got FT status, if someone is willing to work 6 days/40 hours, late shifts, comes to work and is great with customers.... welcome to FT. The problem is all Store Management, Department Head managing their associates and costs, which wasn't happening.

Part of it has to do with the differing pay scales, I suspect. Take me, for example: if I was part time, I would top out at $11.45 in my current position. I'm full time though, so within the next year and a half or so, I'm going to top out at $14.50. Not great... but not bad for someone that isn't a department head, back up or lead. Plus, Kroger doesn't have to schedule a part time person forty hours a week. With me, the company has to, so a full time person such as myself is guaranteed those hours ever week.
