I'm assuming one way of doing this is to check the department and sub department of a product in the handheld but is that correct? If so, how do I get a list of sub department numbers?

Nutrition/Natural Foods/Nature's Market is Department 17 . . . (at least in north Texas).
The list of departmental number codes can be found (from memory here) through the handheld under
CAO
E-40
Transfer: Dept. to dept.
F3.
CAO/Item Info/[Scan the UPC]/F9 will give you a department code for the item.
