How to tell your coworkers don't like you
Permalink

Okay, so this is my first job and I'm wondering if y'all can help me out. I don't think my manager likes talking to me. Yeah, he says hello and I say hello. He answers my questions about the job. But when I try to socialize a bit with him, he always seems too busy to talk to me. Now you may say, well yeah cause he's busy. But then I see him making the time to socialize with other coworkers. So he has time to socialize with them but not with me?

Don't sweat it.  Just be moderately friendly, and don't try to "push" any potential friendships with other employees. If they develop, they will develop naturally and at their own pace. Just be friendly, but don't be overbearing with anyone. Do your job the best you can, and don't feel hurt if some others don't pay any attention to you at first. Honestly, at most Krogers, the new employees , esp font end help, come and go in such high numbers, it almost seems like "work" for older employees to try to learn their names and remember their faces......... before they disappear, only to be replaced with others!   Good luck!

Do your job first.  Don't worry about socializing with the manager.  It may come across as you're trying to kiss butt.  After you've been there a while, things may start to loosen up.  Until then,  just be friendly and cordial abd stay away from any drama.  Also, any converations between other employees are none of your business.  That advice is for everybody.  I can't tell you how many times I'll be having a conversation with another employee and someone, who has nothing to do with what we're talking about, will come along and put in their two cents.

I agree with the other posters. Just keep focused on your job, keep things friendly-ish, civil, and show what type of person you are through your work ethic. Because honestly that is more important than seeing if people really like you. Hell I don't even think my own bakery co-workers fully gotten around to liking me til just recently. And I've been on for a year and some change. Soon will be 2 years in August. But the old timers are just now loosening up to actually ask how is my fam or share any of the extra cookies or even ask my opinion about stuff. And that is mainly cause I'll crack a quick joke, I don't delve into anybody's business unless I hear my name being mentioned as well, and to be honest I'm learning to speak up a bit more towards the resident loud mouth. And even she is coming around more to me as well. Just takes time and best to fly under the radar more times than not.

It's only natural, that people who know each other longer, will socialize more with each other. When they get to know you better or longer, and you guys will have some common topics, they will talk to you more.

People come and go from departments at such a fast rate, most of the people don't want to waste their time to get to know someone, until it's clear that they will stay there longer and not quit after 2 weeks. Also, what you see as socializing, maybe just work related talk. Some departments are so fast paced, there is no time to just stop and talk to you coworkers about anything else than work issues. Like plan the day, who will do what and such.

Just be friendly, do your job as well as you can, let them see that you can pull your weight around and that you are willing to help them when you are done with your tasks. Good luck!
