Should we be concerned Kroger stock is going in the tank ? Could this mean store closings or layoffs?

Yes. Everyone's focused on Amazon and WalMart right now, Kroger seems to have a hard time adapting to the new markets and staying competitive. It's gonna be a rough next couple of years unless they turn things around.

No. Kroger is positioned perfectly to fil the widening gap created by the on line shopping effect.

I would, however, be very nervous if I were in the union. Those guys are in real trouble these days.

Because according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistis, national unionized labor has dropped from 20.1 % in 1983 down to 10.7 % currently. Between that and republicans controlling pretty much all of politics now (not that the dems are any more union friendly, they just claim they are to get your vote), these are not good trends for union workers.

Only worry about stores closing if they don't turn a profit. If your volume ex fuel is under 350k/wk you have a right to be worried.

Kroger needs to be wage-competitive. We have lost employees to Aldi, McDonalds manager training, and Publix just to name a few-all due to higher wages. UFCW 1996 sold us out on the contract-no bonuses no $10.00 bump up higher pay for those currently employed and our union dues will double by the end of the contract.
