What do you do for your lunch?

Hey all,

Just an "out of curiosity I am starting this discussion" post:   What do you buy for lunch, or what do you usually do for your lunch break (I mean 30 minutes).  At my store, some of the employees seem like they wait until it is time to go on lunch break, then wander around in the store without much pre-meditation, looking for something to eat that catches their eye......those packaged cracker and cheese "mini sandwiches",  a box of donuts and a soda, a pre-packaged sandwich from the deli, whatever. Some go to the deli "hot chicken bar" and get some potato wedges and a couple pieces of chicken such as a leg and breast. Some eat off the salad bar.   Others disappear and just take a long smoke break outside, or sit in their cars and listen to the radio or whatever.  Some bring pizza from home and re-heat it in the microwave. What do you do?

My routine (and it has been this way for a long time) is to "pack a lunch" at home, and bring it with me and store it in the break room refrigerator until it is time for my lunch......no running around trying to find something at the last minute (which is a big time-waster in my opinion).  Especially if there is a line of people waiting at the hot chicken bar.

Some of the things I have brought for my "packed lunch" include a sandwich I put together at home (using sliced turkey, ham or whatever, sliced cheese, leaf lettuce or some kind of greens; or chicken or ham salad sandwich); fruit such as an apple, orange, banana, strawberries, etc; a small container of yogurt , pudding, or jello; cookies, chips or crackers I store in a resealable plastic container (such as those pre-sliced Kroger lunchmeats come in), bottled water or soda, and other quick ready-to-eat stuff.  Sometimes I eat in the breakroom, sometimes I eat in my car.

I guess my routine is more of an "old school" thing that was more prevalent many years ago when a "brown bag lunch" usually was just a sandwich, chips, an apple and a drink.   Since I value every minute of my lunch break, it seems so much time is wasted trying to come up with a meal at the last minute.

Not sure how many folks actually take a lunch at my store. But for me personally, I don't have the time for one. So first break I get, I eat something. So I always pack a lunchable or something quick I've picked up from the deli the night before. Definitely saves on all the wandering around as you mentioned.

 I know where I'm transferring!

Seriously, though, I just grab some food and read a book.

Usually I'll have some leftovers from last night's dinner or a sacked lunch. Then after eating I go "deaf" to ANY calls I DECIDE that are not worth answering (Which is almost all of them) or a BONAFIDE emergency which I will respond to. I rest my head until it's time to go back.

Depends. Some days I'll eat the 5-piece wings meal and/or soup from the deli. Other days I'll bring something from home. All determined by if I have something at home I'd like to eat. Usually a packed lunch includes some pasta/burger (veggie or meat), salad, a few cookies and/or protein bar, and drink. Sometimes I'll throw in some chips in case I want those instead of a salad, depending on my sugar values at the time.

I try to not spend so much money on lunches. For the 15-minute breaks, I'll grab a Turkey Hill tea and hot dog to hold me over until I get home. It's usually only around $2 so that's a more reasonable price. Sometimes I'll pick up the 50c bag of chips if I'm feeling a little more hungry. I mention the smaller break because cost is based on time to pack and enjoy, not just price. For 30 minutes, I can enjoy a really good meal at a cheaper cost since it's packed the night before.

I usually get either a 3pc tenders meal from the deli, or sometimes a bollio roll with some chicken salad. I miss my old store that had tortilla chips and cheese sauce on the salad bar, that was awesome.

Much cheaper and better than buying from the deli or getting Subway.

I go home for lunch.  I live less than two miles away.  It's close enough that I could walk home in case of a snowstorm but not so close that I could walk to work in case of a snowstorm.

I almost never get lunch breaks because I'm not fulltime.

If I do get one, I like to get a burrito from Filiberto's before work.  Otherwise, it might be a tv dinner.

Going to the deli is dangerous.  The deli rarely has what I want and the quality is poor.  Straying from potato wedges and popcorn chicken (which they almost never have) is an invitation for diarrhea.  It's also not uncommon for customers to grab me and demand organic mung bean oil or luxury pepperoni, and thus consume half my break.

If it were a regular thing, I'd probably bring a sandwich from home and a can of fruit or something.

It turns out that the tv in our break room is a primitive smart tv.  It's too old to have wifi, but it can do a lot of stuff otherwise.  I've found that it can play music and videos from a thumb drive.  I don't EVER play music from it since I don't want my coworkers to do so, but sometimes I will watch a show of my choosing on break.  Occasionally, I will even leave a season of "The Mighty Boosh" on loop just to baffle everyone.  Store wifi is limited to 1 mb up and down, or else I would connect a Chromecast.

I work in the deli so sometimes I grab a meal, but most of the time I go outside smoke a cigarette and watch the customers coming and going. It's fun watching them, People arguing as they get out of the vehicles, cars almost running into each other trying to get a parking spot, kids crying on their way out because they didn't get what they wanted, couples arguing over who is going to put the groceries in the car, etc. There's always some kind of excitement when sitting outside.

I always got salad from the deli area with either an energy drink or a soda or tea or something like that.

If there were popcorn shrimp available, I'd mix it in with the salad. Fifteen minutes wasn't much.

I go home. I work a 6 hour shift of 8-2 and only get one 15 minute break. I have another job that starts at 3 so I go home in between jobs and eat.

Just act like you do not hear them or go on your cell phone for a "call" and then get your snack. That' what I do. Now I rarely get bothered on my breaks because they associate me with being in my phone or whatnot when I'm walking with food in hand to a line
