I found a wallet with $34.00 cash inside. Nothing to identify its owner. No credit/debit cards, nothing. My question is this, am I obligated to turn it in and let Kroger keep the money? Or just keep it and ditch the wallet. I need the cash more than Kroger, and as stated, it had no identifying cards whatsoever. Am.i still morally obligated to turn it in regardless?

Turn it into the police. If no one claims it after so long, the money is yours.

Careful. Management has been known to pull tricks like this to watch surveilance cameras and see who's dishonest among the staff. I'd just leave it right the hell where you found it.

Bad advice.  If the wallet really does belong to somebody else and you leave it where it was, somebody else might come along and take it.  The best thing is to turn it into the office and have them take your name down as being the one who found it.  Make sure there are witnesses present.  The fact that the wallet had no ID in it makes me wonder if it belongs to some kid.  I found a gold herringbone necklace one time and turned it in.  I got a $20 reward from the owner.

What happens when they see you take it? Do they fire you on the spot? Or do they not say anything and make a note of it and keep it on some hidden record and use it as a basis of judgement for future incidents against you?

Not sure if management can do that. It' entrapment.  Plus what if someone else finds the "wallet setup" and grabs it? There is no way you can force the customer to hand over the wallet. That is just asking for problems.

But return the wallet. Even if you get nothing out of it. It' policy, and you won' loose your job over $34.00

Turn it in to the local police. It is yours if nobody claims it within a certain time frame.

I worked for Ralphs and I found a diamond ring worth a lot of money. Ralphs policy is to turn it in to the manager. Bad idea. It will wind up missing. Management is supposed to turn it over to Loss Prevention. Yeah. right.

Forget that policy. California state law says to turn valuables in to local law enforcement. Protect yourself though. Notify management that you found an item but do not turn it over. Let mgmt. know that it will be turned over to local PD. State law supersedes policy of the store.

I am now the owner of a platinum diamond ring worth $11,000.

Good Lord, what is wrong with people? Should you keep it? Dont you mean to say should you STEAL it? Who raised you? Thieves? Didnt your parents teach you right from wrong? Thats not your money, lets say you keep it. What are you going to do if a customer comes in asking about a lost wallet? Is that $34 what your personal integrity is worth? Sad...

As a bagger, ive found stuff like this (wallets, keys, one of which was sitting in a lady's trunk key hole with her car keys and house on it, as a customer alerted me to it on lot) on the lot. Hell i found a wallet that I turned in that had 200 dollars of her checking or whatever in it from their last bank visit because the customer came back in and was relieved it was found. I turned it into the service desk immediately. An no, i mean as soon as I find it, I take it in and I will put in my pocket or my jacket while I am heading in so someone cannot "oh that is mine" nope, let the service desk figure that out with you. Like anything I have found in the store that is lost and found. The service desk is lost and found, so therefore it goes up there. I do not touch anything or do anything with the item I find other then turn it in, as you peeps looking in it and such, unless you're a supervisor level, it is dangerous to do so and could cost you your job if management / LP really wanted to push the issue. It's a liability you do not need as then you get to talk to the cops.

So much nope. Turn it in immediately, say where you found it, and go back to your duty when the service desk says ok. That's all you should be doing. Let them n management deal with the rest

If it has no ID then why not keep it? It' only $34.00. If you turn it In, store keeps it EVEN IF no one claims it. I'e found wallets and ice ALWAYS checked for ANY type of ID. no ID, then it's mine. (Unless its obviously a kids wallet, but why would a kid carry over $30.00 on their person?

Reasons to turn it in:

1. Because it's POLICY!!
2. Because it's the right thing to do
3. See #2 and #1

As for a kid carrying over $30.00 on their person, that's there business and there's alone.

The ring I found was worth $11000. It went right to the LAPD and after 60 days, it was mine!!

Had it been given to Kroger it would have gone missing. What Paul #774 states is that it's "his." If it had no ID inside. Well guess what Paul, it's NOT "yours." Technically ALL money belongs to the government. We just circulate it in exchange for goods and services. It just keeps circulating around a.d aroumd.

Where did you find the wallet? If it was in the store turn it into customer service. I was told if you find money in the parking lot then it is yours. If you found a wallet outside the store, I would still turn it in

You must have a very generous store manager. That would never happen at my store.

Always turn it into the service desk or management. Don't even let it be a question that you were thinking about taking it. Heck I did that right off when I came in the other day and somebody's keys was left on the ground in front of my locker. I don't know who was crazy enough to rung off and leave their key chain with etheir car keys and what not on it. But I turned it in right away.

The first two that I turned in was from corporate, the last one was from the assistant store manager.
