Okay, So I have worked for Kroger for over a year now. Still dealing with 3 people who completely hate me and refuse to listen to any advice I give them ( I am a Back-up). They also refuse to do their jobs when they know I'm coming in. I know they hate me because I actually do my job and they are unable to chase me away like they have others. It is frustrating. I feel like quitting at least twice a week, but I'm not going to quit because that would make those 3 witches way too happy. Management has allowed this slacking in work, being on the phone while on the clock, and filth they have left behind last for too long. Now there are 2 new people in the department and those 2 people are following in the foot steps of the others. So, I'm now working with 5 people who do not do their jobs. The 2 new people and one of the older 3 will say to me"I'm not doing it" or "I don't feel like doing it". They will literally stand there doing nothing their whole shift and get away with it. The reason they get away with it is because they do serve the customers and customers don't know they are not washing their hands, slicing their products on dirty slicers, and are doing no other part of their job. Management doesn't pay attention to those things, because all they see is that these employees are serving customers. It's great they serve the customers, but if that's all they want to do then they need to be cashiers, not meat clerks, deli clerks, bakery clerks, etc. Those jobs require much more than just serving customers.

Are you actually an assistant department head? Did you earn your job through an union bid?

I just want to confirm. If you are, your department leader should be training you on how to deal with these types of situations and leading by example. A big problem about becoming a new department head/backup is that you will need to earn the clerks' respect which is not easy, especially for very stubborn people. The best way to deal with this situation is finesse, you will need to learn every person's character and act in a way that appeals to them. If they refuse to do something, ask why.

Yes, I am actually Department Lead Assistant! That is my job title. Not sure what you mean by bid, though. I will try the 'Why?'. I seriously doubt I get anywhere with that, since I'm dealing with stubborn minded procrastinators.
