What are the requirements to become full time at Kroger? I've heard it is a minimum of 1500 hours for the year. Is this true? If so, do they consistently schedule you a certain minimum of hours. At my store the minimum schedules for part time is 20. Even if they only schedule me the minimum of only 20 hrs each week, my total would be over the 1500 to become regular. Also do regular employees receive benefits immediately after being promoted?
You have to get promoted to some kind of manager or department head. Otherwise, Kroger has to make a mistake and you have to go the union with proof. And then they have to help you! Realistically, this isn't going to happen.
The requirements depend on your contract. On our last one, I think you have to average 40 hours for a year or something impossible like that. On older contracts, it might be more like two or four months at 35 hours.
The problem is that once you start to get close, you will get a minimum hour week or two and they won't let you pick up shifts. Around here, that's a 12 hour week.
The last time an hourly employee achieved full time without promotion at my store was something like 8 years ago. LP went on a firing rampage. A large part of the front end was fired, and some employees with seniority were able to get enough hours since they had old contracts and hiring/training/drug tests/background checks were so slow.
A few years back, a buddy of mine in another department got close, and then triggered the 12 hour week. He called in all the favors he could somehow picked up enough hours.
Full time wasn't automatic. He went to management to complain, and in between nose picks, they told him to prove it or go away. He got what he could together, and went to the union. They told him it was nap time and they were far too busy.
That will only get you part time with full time benefits, though. In cinci its practically impossible to get status 1 full time nowadays. I've been 40 hours or more every week since I started and Im still not status 1, even being a night lead.
All employees are classified as part time which means 40 hours a week are not guaranteed. To get 40 hours there are a few ways. First is to get a lead position that is always guaranteed 40 hours a week. Secondly is to take cashiering shifts that no one likes likes nor wants and just suck it up. Third is to be willing to come in when they call or stay over if they ask. They're more willing to give full hours to those that are willing to give up their time to the company and not complain about it. I might get a small hand full of 40 hours each year. I also noticed they play hour games with the one hour lunch for anything over six hours. This hour lunch reduces your 40 hour week down to 37 because it's reducing pay.
Non-union stores have no problem with this. We can give out 40 hour weeks even to regular employees because it doesn't affect us. Not that a ton of people get that, but several do and not just leads and department heads. Hell, I never work less than 40 and usually upwards of 45 weekly.
This is evidently one of those things that varies depending on what division you reside in. For me, someone that is part of the Southwest Division, all I had to do was work twelve weeks straight of nothing but forty hours and I was automatically reclassified as full time. Of course, that probably wouldn't have happened had my store manager not been cool with me becoming full time, but he was, and so it happened.
I thought with the new Cinci contract they were going back to status 1? Also, what's the difference between Status 1 and 3?

Status 3 PT with FT benefits
Status 4 PT
In cinci, status 1 is basically more rights. Guaranteed 40hours is the big one , status 3 is guaranteed 32, status 4 is guaranteed 20, I think. With some special holiday rights, OT rights, and the ability to sell vacations. Also, youre immediately higher on the totem pole than anyone in status 3, for vacations and things. Im not sure how its changed in the new contract so Im pretty uncomfortable just spouting things. Its also hard to differenciate status 1 from pre 1986 status 1s, who have a contract that will never change. Sunday pay as (optional) overtime is one of them. Its definitely better to be status 3 than status 4. Youre in a better ladder for vacations, and your OT is daily instead of weekly.
Which, in cinci, means you never have to work over 8 hours. Not sure if the OT crackdown is only here or not.
