A friend I work with has been trying to be transferred to another store closer to their home.  The excuse they got was, "We can't let you go because you've been working here too long." I thought that was hor$e$hit from a bears' a$$ naturally, so I gave them the number for the union office and told them who to talk to. Now I know that any dumb excuse can be used to mess with you, but isn't the real reason for being denied a transfer is because an opening isn't available yet? Also, should they talk to the steward about this?

Try to contact your coordinator directly. Generally they will be the ones that do it, will have the more professional attitude about it, and in the end okay it. It skips store management entirely. They could just be trying to intimidate your friend into changing his mind, or punishing him. You can also have your friend contact a store directly to find out if there are openings, which he can communicate his interest in directly to said coordinator.

"We cant let you go because you'be been working her too long" is kinda a compliment but also a nice way to say "no". Most Managers will not freely let people transfer unless they are given a HIGHLY legit reason. Also, if you have been at your location for a while and like the environment/people/customers, sometimes transferring is a mistake. While "Standards" might make the stores look the same, each stores is highly different because of the employees and the customers!  If your highly motivated to transfer going to the HR Coordinator would be the most effective, but have a reason that isn't able to be disputed.
