Another coin jam at the Uscan
Permalink

This time I made the mistake of thinking I could actually rationalize with the customer.

His order was for a total of $19. He took out his bag of coins and started shoving them down the Uscan. Surprise, Uscan has jammed up and doesn't want to take anymore coins. Flags me down, "why this thing ain't takin' my money." I tell him it's broken and show him that, so far, it has taken $3 from him, as it shows on the screen. So I tell him I'm going to take care of his order, and he should give me the rest of his money and we'll finish this. I even counted the coins that were in his bag. I know, should recommend him to use the Coinstar, but I thought, it's not busy, let me count 'em anyway.

The bag had $4 in coins. So add that to the $3 that he jammed in the machine, that's $7. So he owed $12 to finish and cash out the order. I told him that. Oh, no... no, no, no, no... He refused to believe that. "I had $20 and yo machine still rumblin with my money." I explained to him again, that the $3 he put in the machine is included in the total I had at the attendant station. "where yo manager at. you better call that damn manager."

At this point, I gave up. I gave him back his money, the bills he gave me, and the $4 coin bag. I even gave him $3 from my till, which represents the money jammed in the machine. At this point I'm thinking, okay, it's over. He'll just go to a cashier and checkout. Nope... he still believes his money is in the Uscan. From the way he kept repeating "I had $20" I think he thinks the machine had WAY more than $3. ....$20???

So this guy is still here cussing me out, yelling for a manager. There wasn't even an ACSM around, it's 8pm, the ACSM was on break. Luckyly, one of the office people was around. I asked him if he could handle this. I explained to office guy, that I gave him $3 from my till, which is the amount the Uscan said it received.

Office guy opens up Uscan. Customer still makes a snide remark about me. Security guard heard this from across the store and casually comes up to me asking me if he paid for the stuff. Now I'm not exactly sure what office guy gave the customer, but I'm gonna assume he gave him the $3 in the machine, PLUS whatever else was in there that didn't register. So like, an extra 30 cents, maybe. So not only does this guy get his original $3 in coins, but he has the $3 I gave him, and an extra 30 cents. Okay then... At least I filled out a blank voucher for $3 and put it in my till.

Office guy rescans the customer's order on a different Uscan, cause original Uscan was frozen from the jam. Puts in the cash, gives him the change. Office guy explains to the customer that next time he should use the Coinstar machine outside.

You can usually clear a jam by unbending a large paper clip and poking it into the coin slot, if you have the same Uscans we do. In my experience they usually get stuck just a couple of inches in, and you can usually wriggle them loose.

There is no way this can possibly backfire.
