Several times our Utility people have found what seems to be drug paraphernalia in our bathrooms. The other day two women went in together into our handicapped stall. What do you do in situations like this? Call for a on duty Manager or?!? Any comments welcome.
Call MOD when the MOD is there......say CLEANING, CLEANING....we need to CLEAN the whole bathroom. Or....... Open the door and LOUDLY say.....Officer Smith they are in the bathroom come quick. I'm sure they will either play dead...or they will run out of there fast!!
I'm seeing that, as well as a LOT of increasing evidence of homeless people using our bathroom sinks like public showers, and it's not uncommon to look under a stall and see dirty clothes all splayed out and hear someone taking a toilet bath.
I know this sounds insensitive and uncompassionate but I don't care. I'm pretty sick of watching our society rot away----and it's 99% due to drug/acohol addiction, which is NOT a disease, it's a choice.
People standing on the street corner day after day, might have needed help in the beginning, but after standing there for weeks/months....whats the excuse? Most people needing help, will suck up their pride and ask for it....standing on the street corner with a sign, shooting up in a bathroom....your not wanting help.
This is why our restrooms are locked. They have those combination locks on the doors. Whenever someone wants to use the restroom, an employee has to unlock it.
I found a used syringe in our parking lot leaving on Saturday night (I worked 3-11.) No needle and what was it doing in the MIDDLE of our lot? It could not have come from the Urgent Care Center that is also in our shopping center. This area is starting to get bad-the Race Trac station across the street had one of their customers jumped and beaten up and the perp stole two cartons of cigarettes he purchased.)
I'm sure the locks are only for entry, not for exit. Why would it be illegal to have a locked restroom? I'm guessing this location is smaller and does not have a prepared deli food area. As long as your providing access, I'm sure it justified by being a liability/security issue. People think they are entitled to many things by the law......
I am the original poster-thanks for all the comments, I now have a better idea of what to do. We also have an issue with homeless men using the men's facilities like a shower also.
When I worked security / safety team at an anime con, we (you an your partner with you) always swept bathrooms almost three to four times an hour for this very reason, because there were problems like this. If we found them or suspected them, we call for additional backup / venue security / police to assist while keeping eyes on the entry if they wander out, we tail them until backup arrives an takes over. Even at work I sweep bathrooms and other "hidey-holes" that custys like to sneak behind as part of my night routine when I am on cleaning, and i will take the time to look for it. Haven't seen any yet, but if i ever do, same response. Put an immediate call for MOD with the restroom / area closed until they assess and make a determination while keeping your eyes open for any signs of people who might of used.

My store is in an interesting area. We see someone like that, we just go ahead and call local PD. Don't even wait to give them a chance to shoot up or cause problems. Haven't had an issue with them doing dope in the bathrooms YET but I'm sure a few of them have. Personally I'd be half-tempted to spray them with the water hose that the morning guy uses to clean the bathroom floors, but I reckon that might get me fired.
