They're already naturally sweet as hell. I don't get it.

I don't find strawberries very sweet. I like to put some sugar on them or eat them with a whipped cream on top. Or, drizzled with chocolate syrup, yum.

I find them incredibly tart and sour. Not a big fan.

They're only sweet if they're ripe.

Actually, there is considerable variability in strawberries.  Sometimes they ARE rather sour. Other times they can be rather sweet. And sometimes in-between.  Also the way they taste can be influenced by the  area where they were grown, the weather conditions (too hot, too wet, too dry), how long since they were picked and packed, and exactly how ripe they are.

On top of that, the sensation of taste is altered by what you ate or drank immediately before, or along with, eating strawberries.   And since our taste buds may not be quite the same, some people might taste a stronger taste sensation of "sour" than other people.

When using them to put over some type of shortcake or 'sweet bread' or whatever,  I like to slice them thin and add sugar...........

Alot of people buy that 'strawberry glaze' in the small plastic tubs, and mix with their sliced strawberries, although I think that stuff is WAY overrated, mostly water, cornstarch and sugar. It doesn't really taste that good to me.

Disclaimer: I have not researched this online, so this is just my "feel" of the subject from eating alot of strawberries in my life, and working in produce.  Comments welcome!

Strawberries are often bred for many qualities, like size and color, which makes them sell better, or pest-resistance, which makes more viable. Often lost in that is breeding for taste, which is why store-bought strawberries can be kinda meh in comparison to ones you grow yourself or pick at a farm.

I bet you're one of those people who doesn't care for sweet stuff.  So anything remotely sweet is going to be too sweet for you.  We have a girl in the bakery who barely puts any glaze or icing on the donuts and sweet goods because that's the way she likes it.  Nobody buys her stuff because they want more icing on them.

 You bet right!

About 10 years ago, I used to be normal. I would always drink my cup of tea every morning with AT LEAST six teaspoons of sugar. I barely drank water. Water was nasty to me. All I'd drink is soda and juice.

Then I got tired of being sick. Nowadays, some fruit here and there is all the sugar I need. And water. TONS of water. I love water.

Ya know, I hadn't realize that strawberries could even be sweet, until I had picked up this Sweet Orchard brand from Wal-mart a few weeks ago. Some of the best strawberries I've ever had in my life. Because so many of the others I've had, often tasted as sour as a lemon(and that is often without me eating them with something else).

But yea, I agree with the other poster about different types being created all the time. And I think everything always depends on freshness too. Cause I've found even with blueberries(that I was never a big fan of for years), that if they aren't fresh they are much more sour and really gritty and why I did not like them. Then I had a friend tell me how sweet they can be when they are fresh. I was still doubtful, til I picked some up that were nice and fresh. And oh yea, there was a world of difference . Much sweeter and tasted bomb. So timing is everything.

P.S. Saw your other post about not being a big fan of water then loving it. And also having 6 teaspoons of sugar for your tea. I think doing a big health change like that, can definitely change how your taste buds translate out how sweet or sour things are. Which in this case, is a really good thing. As it keeps you from eating too much of the bad stuff. But still have to make sure to pay attention to the nutritional facts on "healthy" stuff too. As some companies get sneaky by adding in extra sugars and so forth just to preserve the item longer. But yea that still translate out to something much more sugary than you were expecting.

Try honey if your strawberries need sweetness coaching.  Smoother texture; richer flavour.

I've tried that route as well. But just not a big honey fan in general either. Now if they could find a way for THAT to taste good. Might be in business lol. Cause although I can enjoy it in my tea. I don't like it as a sweeter for much else.

Honey flavours are so varied based on what the source nectars are.  Avocado-blossom honey--dark, molasses like, with notes of bitter and salt--is wildly different than that from, say, saw palmetto.

Some people find them tart.  I find them sweet.  I always found sugar puts too much sweet on Strawberries.  If they're some what bitter then I will just to be able to eat them.

I can barely tolerate the tartness, often outright sourness, of Kroger's strawberries, or most any grocery store's.

I acknowledge that far from being the "best of the pick of crop", most Kroger's fruit is somewhere on the spectrum between sweet and sour, with very little actual fruit flavor along the way.

My favorite way to eat strawberries is to dip them, one at a time, into sour cream, then brown sugar. No, it doesn't work to mix the brown sugar and the cream. If you haven't tried them this way, strongly recommended.
