At your Kroger store, do you keep your employee breakroom door open or shut?

I just wondered........... before our store remodel, the employee breakroom was on the ground floor, and the door was almost always kept shut, and it seemed better that way, so the employees have a bit more privacy, could relax a little more, eat their lunch in relative peace, without everyone and anyone (like managers overhearing all their chatter.  Besides, it would cut down a bit on outside noise from the store sales floor.

NOW, the breakroom is on the second floor, close to the managers' office and co-managers' desks, computers, etc,  and the door to the breakroom is ALWAYS open. If it gets shut, it doesn't take long before someone opens it again and props it open.  (And this has nothing to do with heat or cold air, it seems to be they want it open all the time).

Yea at my old store/the one I trained at before going to our current location, the break room was downstairs and had a door. Was rather dark and creepy too if you ask me. Like shady deals should be going down there or some place you would buy "party favors" from or something, lol. So always sort of wigged me out getting my schedule from in there. I'd always make sure to come in extra early, to get it before any one else was in there, and then leave; so I could get back to the time clock and just clock in. No way was I waiting around in there.

But yea, the break room we have now is upstairs, more open and inviting. More windows, leather chairs and so forth. Very inviting and just plain user friendly. And no door whatsoever. But it's more on a "East" wing section of upstairs and the managers is more of a "West" wing of the building area of sorts. As we have a bit of walk(lockers sort of divide up the space in between too) between both sections. And I'd still prefer it over that other break room.

My break room doesn't even have a door but it's in the back of the store (my store is only on one floor) and the manager's office is far enough away that they can't hear anything from in there. You only have to be careful if there is a manager coming out of the dairy cooler.

Just close it and everytime they open it get up and close it. Do play that game a few times. If they say anything to you. Put your hands over your ears and yell I CANNOT HEAR YOU!! Then close it when you get off break go to the nearest computer and print a sign that reads.

KEEP THIS DAMN DOOR CLOSED!!!

The 2 doors to our breakroom stay open all day. Ours is downstairs in the hallway to backroom.

Ours always stays open. There's swinging doors between dairy and frozen that separates it from the sales floor. Yet, customers still manage to ask for help once we walk through the doors.

A break room in my opinion should always be open to employees.  It should never be locked or if it must be locked add a code pad for access.  This way customer can not just wonder upstairs and it will also provide you safety for late at night.

I totally agree with this. I still don't like the idea how we have customers that can go up to the conference room and get family pictures and stuff done. And sometimes they wander down to the break room and be just sitting in there and looking around. It's just awkward as hell at times. But given the fact that for a long time we had issues with the managers not being able to find keys to the trash compactor. And new hires barely getting EUIDs before they enter the department. I doubt having something requiring a pass code would be a good idea for my store.

Who cares? If your on break, relax and eat your food. If you don't feel comfortable saying something in front of everyone, don't say it. Most new stores only have doors on areas with sensitive information or to limit access.
