Is it wrong to call out the day before a vacation?  I'm so exhausted I can't bring my self to show up for a short 4 hour shift before a few days off.

Not at all. In fact, it's totally understandable. Just explain it to them when you call in and you'll be fine. Enjoy your vacation!

Thank you.  It's a mixed moral dilemma.  I was taught always show up for your shifts.  I'm burned out.  Last year I lost three family members in a year and a quarter time frame. In addition to all the health b.s. associated with it.  Diagnosed with two major health issues that I now live with and have gotten to a "comfortable" live style with them.  This is the first time in about two years in which I have a "me" vacation.  Meaning lie around the house in pj's for five days.

4 hours!

I have worked 32 hours in 3 days because 5 people called in on the last 3 days.   4 days ago, 3 people didn't come in and 6 of us worked a 12 hour shift.

Calling in went fine.  My exhaustion in the morning sounded like a soar throat.  As long as I don't abuse the privalge like other said coworkers it's okay.  When you abuse it then it breaks that trust.

Ok, I completely understand. So how is it any different with you calling in today? You would be one of the "Call Offs" for today....and cause others to do more.

You can't work 4 more hours before going on a week vacation??

Why do people have this attitude? We're all burned out at this point but if you're working 4 hour shifts, then you must be part time. You can't be doing anymore work than the rest of us that's for sure. I get tired too but I don't do this to my coworkers. I lost my dad this year too, and I didn't call off any more than I had to. For one, being at work kept my mind off things. But I guess I have a different viewpoint on things too. I wouldn't have felt right leaving my department high and dry. Family is important, I would never say otherwise. But me sitting at home feeling sorry for myself wouldn't have done any good either. And management was very understanding of my situation, didn't make a big deal when I had to call off. The reason why is because they knew I never call off for stupid reasons.

Can't say that I feel it's morally or ethically wrong. But yea depending on what department you work in and how well or not so well staffed it is. You are definitely going to be given some major stink eye when you came back. Most especially if leading up to the day before your vacation you are like how some of my fellow co-workers are, that just don't agree with something or are complaining a lot of about something. And even will tell you they plan on calling off the next day before they do. Then yea, I'd feel some kind of way about you calling off before your vacation. I mean I get we are all exhausted and tired as well. But yea I think everyone's little bit counts.

I'm a millennial and i've worked here 7 years and i've called off maybe 5 times in the whole time i've worked here. Two of which were in the past year and they were for emergency family situations.

But I agree there are a lot of lazy younger workers.
