Low staff high expectations

tell me why our store managers want the front end to do a million things with no help. How can the front end supervisor properly run the front end while running a register. They take our people without asking or letting us know until we call for them. They want us to have our baggers do stuff they can do in 30 seconds. They complain we have no carts in the store but it's super busy and we dont have enough to keep up with business. When we have a few minutes of downtime and are actually are coaching and we get a rush of people they say we aren't paying attention. I really dislike our leadership team and can't stand our company. Just venting

Our store too. One bagger called in a d they didnt let us know. So therefore that persons sweeps and carts were not done. 4 hours worth. And then they got mad at one of our baggers because he didnt cover the absentees duties. We tried to say no one knew. But it STILL didnt matter. Now the new rule is, if you see an abundance of carts loose, and no one in sight, do them. Sweeps are now responsibility of ALL ccs and utility clerks.

I don't work on the front end. But I do know at our store they are going through a lot of folks calling off and so forth and we barely have any baggers at all. But honestly, I think that is happening throughout the stores. I mean even with all the new folks they hired on of late even for the deli. And yet the on 2n3, it was just me and another closer that came in at 6. If it wasn't for one of the deli back up managers and my friend down in the bistro coming down to help after two 1st shift workers left at 4, I'd have been scrambling around the deli by myself until 6 when the other closer came in. I mean it was so bad that the deli back up nearly got into it with the clicklist lead. As the chick was saying she doesn't know what we do with our hours and scheduling people etc. etc. But it's like dude, how can we even get to working on that when every time you turn around we are 8 people deep at the counter every half of a second?! So yea, definitely wasn't a good time at all. But can't be helped, cause they live to put on so many people for the weekend(which I get is majorly busy as well), but when it comes back around to the beginning of the week and especially during the time for a holiday. There is hardly anybody working at all! That's why I wish they could have a policy that when you are hired on, regardless if you had certain restrictions on most days and can only work in the day time. You still have to work at least one or two nights on closing at times too. If not that, schedule a few more people 10 to 6 or 11 to 7 to fill in that gap between morning and closing.

I worked for a major competitor for many years, 7 of which were in produce. The last year of that was a grinding nightmare of management's ever increasing expectations. They were always marching through in groups, with their clipboards and pens, score carding every micro detail. N o t h i n g was ever good enough, and it didn't matter that we simply never had enough staffing or hours, 'That's no excuse!!' I'm happily divorced from that rotten marriage for almost 3 years now, and am truly happy and at peace.

Meanwhile, this business is seriously on the ropes and is undergoing a real blood bath of management layoffs and staff firings.

.....So it really upsets me to see now that Kroger is going through some of the same corporate directed business decisions. I hope the company turns things around and returns to the retailer that always (at least seemed to) reflect decent, ethical values.

I know this is bad, but when I hear "surge to the front" I dont go, I am busy and have a million things to do, if they need baggers and cashiers that bad, they need to hire them. They go through a lot of people on front end because MGMT is a bunch of jerks and the front end MGMT are even worse, I have work friends who work on front end and they say that they can't take their breaks until they are told they can, sorry but that wouldnt work for me, if I am hungry, I am taking my break, too bad, so sad LOL.

Kroger and it's affiliates are not terrible to their employees, but IMHO they could be better. personally I think that if you work 8 hrs or more you should get an hour break, and if you work 5 hours or more you should get 30 min, I mean ... school oftentimes kids get an hour lunch LOL.

PLEASE, PLEASE give us some clues as to which "major competitor" this was.  I am dying to know!!!!!  Since you are posting anonymously, no harm will be done if we can figure it out.  I like to know which companies are almost as bad (or worse) than Kroger!

And someone I know told me they thought Que-Vision was going to be the death nail in the coffin for the company...The more stories I hear from the stores, the more I'm inclined to believe him...It's also a bad sign when the front end can't control/utilize/work with the baggers they've got and have to call members from other departments to bag to make up the difference on those busy days...There have been MANY of these busy days FOR MANY YEARS, with STILL the same underwhelming results every time...Boy, you think with such a history of failed experiments, dismal results and inefficiency, this company would have learned it's lesson by now and tried some new approaches...BUT, NO! And I keep thinking...Either 1. TRAIN YOUR PEOPLE BETTER, 2. HIRE BETTER PEOPLE, or 3. JUST HIRE MORE PEOPLE...Apparently, this is some sort of "rocket science" to the company! confuse

We're suffering from alot of turn-over at 448 Atlanta division.  Our management is a nightmare along with high expectations.  This company needs a huge overhaul or it'll go under.  Even Walmart is better than this ****.  Atleast they won't bitch to you about overtime.

They can't hire better people as long as they are only bringing in part time help off the streets at 7.35 an hour.  You get what you pay for and that is why most of the people they have working for kroger now don't give a s--t, especially the part time new hires.  They are not up front with you when they hire you about how hard it is to get full time if at all and if you are ignorant about the unionized pay scale, they will 100% only give you 7.35 an hour to start regardless of your past experience.  You literally have to fight it to get more or what you are actually supposed to get.  If you "roll-over" it is by accident because you worked some OT hours at some point that pushes your average up.  Kroger doesn't want anybody going full time anymore unless they think they can make a manager out of you.  How do you expect employees to put Kroger first, if you do not provide them with a "career" job to work at.  Until Kroger gets with the program and starts paying all their associates a minimum of 9 bucks an hour and up and quit being dishonest with their new hires, respect the union contracts, as well as give new hires an opportunity to go full time, things are not going to improve in their stores.  #3 of your points in bold above is another problem with the company.  There just is not enough people working in many of the stores at the store level to be able to handle all the work that is required to keep the customers happy and the employees not stressed out.
