Was curious if only the managers, back ups, and department heads get more a full week off for each of their vacations they have earned? If say, they have been with the company for X amount of years and have up to 4 weeks of vacay they can take.
And everyone else, gets just the one standard week, but any subsequent weeks they've earned; they are only allowed to take those additional weeks in days? As it occurred to me that one of our deli back ups has taken like 2 vacations during the year. And even the DH has taken 3 or so himself before. But unless others are doing a bunch of requests off or have like one day of vacation or something. I don't think I've ever seen most others taking a full week off save for those in supervisory roles.
I don't think I saw anything in the handbook about that. But I was wondering about how all that worked as I'll be coming up on 3 years in no time flat(not this year, but the year after). And I was just wondering if I could schedule both my 2 weeks off around the same time. Or even split them(one in the summer and one during the week of my bday), But if there is a vacation in days thing for any subsequent weeks if you aren't a manager. Then that will definitely pose a bit of a prob.

You get your third vacation week in days, I think (I don't have my union book here.) From there on you have one week in days and the rest in solid weeks. (This might be negotiable with HR to some degree; I got the impression that breaking a week into days was meant to be a perk, not a restriction-- essentially allowing you to take a couple of long weekend trips, or have a few four-day workweeks, or what have you.)

If your department is large, this usually isn't a problem. If it's small and you have your heart set on a particular week (and can't just shift a week or two) you can sometimes get results by just talking to people with more seniority and asking them politely to not pick that week. I used to be one of the two people available to run a particular critical shift, and I did not have seniority. I just asked my counterpart to NOT take her vacation in the week I needed to have off (I was going to an out of state convention.) She had no plans for that week and made sure to avoid it.

Huh, how does that work though for scheduling the days then? Would I have to just put it into my schedule through eschedule like with a personal day? Or do I have to tell them at the beginning of the year that say I would want the week of November 29th and then I would want x,y, and z days off for vacation time as well?
And true, I get you won't always get the initial week that you were hoping for. Heck, I barely even got my vacation in this year. Cause for some reason they had bumped up a lot of folks in the Deli do to some people quitting and what not. And some how or other my name fell through the cracks on getting a week. And thankfully, I had happened to look over the vacation schedule that the managers had posted and saw that my initial week was not only scratched out, but another week they thought to give me was scratched out as well. So my DH looked over the calendar he had and didn't see me and asked me which week I wanted.
I just wanted to see how vacation stuff would proceed in the future. As to communicating with my co-workers about a particular week off....yeah that is a whole other story. I mean not to say that there aren't some more reasonable folks I could ask to not take a particular week or switch with me. But others are so deliberate in nixing you out of what week you want, to the point where I keep mum about it, unless I'm talking to the scheduler about it. Or even me just marking it on the schedule myself. So it's great that you have people you work with that are reasonable like that.
