Spotting a potential scammer
Permalink

So the other day I had this experience where this man walked up to me while I was at my SCO station and started off greeting me assertively by shaking my hand and calling me by my name. Then going on to compliment how much of a great worker I am. And I think he even told me his name. Like as if I was in a business meeting and we were about to go into a business deal.

I thought it was incredibly strange right off the bat. Because soon afterwards, he asked me to cash his coinstar receipt. We already have a policy against giving out change, but we still do coinstar receipts.

As I was counting the change for his $40 coinstar, he asked for $15 in singles out of it. He walked away to chat with his buddy as I was counting the singles. When I was done, he counted the singles, then claimed I owed him a dollar.

So my question is, when a customer greets me in such away by name, complimenting me on my work habbits, and such and such, is that always a red flag that they're about to start a scam?

In my experience, yes. They start out on such a good note so that you'll 'let things slide' for them but then get difficult and/or try to scam. Make sense?

Generally they start off either like that guy did, or they start off super belligerent to the point where you just want to get them out of there.

It's very suspicious.

If I had to guess, he was serving as a distraction while his buddy LOADED UP.
