What's the point in having these sales?...

If your warehouse runs out the first day of the ad, and send max quantities or none at all. Literally EVERY SINGLE TIME the small Tide bottles go on sale, our warehouse runs out on the truck after the ad begins. Literally like clockwork. Same thing with the Mayo and Ketchup for that 1 day .99 sale a while ago, we were out by 10am because they scratched 40 of 50 ordered cases off the order. Its absolutely ridiculous how Kroger can't manage to supply themselves with enough product for these sales. Customers only see that we're out and don't care/understand why, and I don't blame them. Kroger is by FAR the worst grocery chain with OOS due to warehouse shortages/scratches. Everyday during my Lows/Holes scan I probly have 60+ scratches, and that might be on the low side.

Or send 4 or 5 pallets for a one day flash sale and you're stuck trying to get rid of it for the next 2 months.

A couple months ago there was a sale for 1.99 (or something low like that) watermelons. They ordered 20 bins, and got about 3. Ran out pretty fast.

It was all meant to get people in the store.

It's my (uninformed, perhaps mistaken) understanding that the main reason why so many items are out of stock at the warehouse, and so will be scratched and not come in on the orders to the stores,  is because of POOR JUDGEMENT,  BAD DECISIONS being made by employees farther up the ladder, (in the corporate office?)  relating to purchasing large quantities of product at the wholesale level from various suppliers/distributors.   That is, there are a lot of young, inexperienced, and/or dumb employees making those decisions (not ordering enough of something to stock all stores sufficiently) that ultimately end up in gobs of OOS's across the board.

(IN addition, some oos can be traced to a problem even farther back in the "transportation chain" such as not enough product being produced by the actual manufacturers???)

Can anyone with GOOD, REAL, solid information chime in on this???  I would like to get a better overall idea on the root causes for these kinds of things.

That is our theory too.  A Kroger employee, The Purchaser, is not buying enough product for the warehouse. The warehouse can't send it if they don't have it.

As soon as we find out about the sale and what products, we order heavy accordingly before the warehouse runs out.

The last angel soft/Quilted Northern & Brauny sale was bad.  Everything was scratched and OOS until the Tuesday night.  The ends change over Tuesday evening....

I remember that, It was for Memorial day if i recall correctly. Fun thing is the buyers told the Kroger higher ups there was not enough supply to support the sale, Kroger said tough were are running it anyway.

They're bait and switch loss leader items.  We aren't supposed to have enough to go around.  They are only to get the customer into the store.  We don't actually want the customer to get them, which is why we aren't allowed to write rainchecks for them.

In our division we've been told to do rainchecks if needed to keep customers happy.

As a Grocery Manager, you can look at ads over a week out. ORDER THE STUFF IN ADVANCE. Like the upcoming flash sale items for next weekend? Already ordered those. Taking up room in my backroom but not going to have to worry about not getting any. The chips that are on sale this week? Had those damn things ordered the next truck after that ad was available. Ran out of one already and can't get them, but sold A LOT. Oh, and if you're stuck with several pallets after a sale, KEEP IT ON SALE. Maybe not the 99 or whatever but you can run a sale on it to get it out the door. The space and time for not having to fool with it is usually more valuable than the small loss of selling for less. Company has gotten better at running sales after the flash sale too, like the cereal. It's still on sale, and we're still stuck with a bunch of it, and we'll continue to run it on sale if we continue to be stuck on it.

My store ran out of Yoplait Go-Gurt early on Friday & no one bothered to order more for Saturday. Same exact thing happened with the Nature Valley layered granola bars & bites, last weekend.
