So for stores that aren't open 24/7, what happens when people who come into work before the store opens get to work?
In my store, they call and so many of them hit 1 for bakery and expect me to keep running up to the door to unlock it and i'm getting kind of tired of it. When I bake, I call the store and let it page meat department, that way the whole night crew knows someone's at the door instead of making 1 person keep doing all the work!
It's always when i'm in the middle of my bake at 4 or 5 in the morning and it's getting annoying! One of the baggers called this morning and instead of asking me to let her in, simply calls and says "There's 3 or 4 of us waiting outside" in this really snotty tone... I just wanted to be like, "And?" My name tag says bakery manager, not door greeter.
I'm probably just ranting over nothing but does this bother anyone else early in the morning or is my store just stupid?
You're right. It's not your job to be a doorman. Is there a night checker there for things like employee purchases? If so then it should be that person's job to watch the door and let people in. If there isn't then the head stock person should be given a list of who's coming in and at what time. That way they can watch for those people. Another thing you can do if people keep calling the bakery is to transfer them to customer service or to the manager on duty and let them deal with it.
When i use to come in before the store opened, night crew would let us in. HOWEVER...I'd sometimes have to knock, and knock, and knock at thr door to let me in...AND THEY WERE RIGHT THERE! Not sure if they had earbuds in or not but it took a whike for them to notice. Really..

Do you have a large vestibule area between the inner and out doors? I've asked someone about why they don't answer the door when someone is knocking and they said it's because you can't hear it.
For my store at least, night crew shows up before 10 - 11 and works til 6 to 7. This is so the store is still open as we close at 1am and reopen 6am. If need be, the Center Store Lead for second shift will switch out with the third shift CSL after 11pm when they come in, only manager holds keys and they stay there until the 3rd shift CSL relieves them. If people ever show up late, the exit door near Front End is where all employees usually will knock or theyll call the store.

Yes we do. But if you knock on the window with a metal key fob they can hear because it echos. I have worked nightcrew before and when you knock on the large windows with the key fob you can hear it. Plus our nightcrew is all over the place walking to and from break, lunch, restroom etc. so there is no way they cant not hear it,.
In my store, we have a lobby where the carts are before you go into the second set of doors so knocking doesn't work, which is why we call the store. I just think it needs to be the job of the night crew lead (who whoever she sends up front) not the morning baker.
I just figure if i stop answering the phone early in the morning it'll piss off a bunch of people. I was about ready to go off on that one bagger lady this morning though. Some of these people probably think i'm too nice/a pushover/whatever but who did she think she was getting that snotty about it?

You can't not answer the phone in case it might be an actual customer wanting to order something from the bakery. Here are some things you can do if someone calls the bakery to come open the door.
1. Transfer the call the another department.
2. Page someone over the intercom to go open the door.
3. Say you'll be there shortly and then go about your business.
I use to hit the buzzer a few times and grocery would come up and open the door, when I had to open. Sometimes they would already have the side open for vendors and if I saw that then I'd just go over there.

I sometimes hear some one banging on the glass. I just quickly turn around and go back down the isle. Aint got time to unlock that door.
I'm the Grocery Manager and it's my responsibility since we have a security alarm and I'm about the only one with a code to let people in. Benefit is I can let my own damn self in if I ever come in early morning instead of at night since I have keys.

Ill have to remember that when and if by chance we work in the same store and you are knocking to come in for your shift.

Hahaha Ill be sure to look you in the eye so you know I saw you and turn back around.
i work right in the front of my store, so i'm usually the designated door opener. i don't wear earbuds usually so i can hear people knocking on the glass and let them in. it's the same people i see every day so i immediately recognize them by what time they knock. we usually keep our back shutter door unlocked, so the truck drivers let themselves in and find one of us to sign their paperwork. sometimes a stranger will be at the door and i'll ask them who they are, but it's usually someone doing maintenance or whatever. so far i've never had to reject someone from the door, lol.
I am usually scheduled in at 5 every morning. We call in to the store and hit number 3 for floral shop, that way the night crew knows there is someone outside that needs let in.
They used to do that at my store too but the store manager made them start locking it at night. I don't really know why because I never saw anyone come in when they weren't supposed to be but I assumed it was corporate policy.
