i think Kroger should lower minimum wage. A lot of the employees dont deserve what it is today. With the reduced pay this will make associates appreciate their job more and respect the company more. What do you all think?

Walmart hires at more than minimum wage around here.

The only people left would be those unhireable at Walmart, most of whom would be underage courtesy clerks.

That's the case at my store. At night I'm literally supervising a group of children and teenagers and young adults, with the "oldest" being 24. Half of the cashiers are in high school. Kinda makes me feel pervy because some of them are fine as hell.

Nope. That WOULD lead to MORE employee theft just so they could have food on the table. Or if they TRIED to lower min wage, which they CANNOT, Kroger would have to lower the cost of food, or risk it being stolen so employees can eat.

Same problem at my store. We have a core of people who are "topped out." (I'm one of those people, but I started with enough experience to top out relatively fast.) It pays competitively, and has some nice perks.

Pity it takes longer to top out than it does to earn a college degree from a fresh start.

Almost all our new hires are either minors or desperate (and we're perpetually understaffed despite hiring practically anyone who walks in the door because we leak employees like a sieve. I'm in my third year and I'm on the top half of seniority in my department.) The ones we do get often get a better paying job within six months. Every really good new hire we take on vanishes because they can't live on near minimum wage for four years.

When you offer $8, with no hope of a significant raise for several years, and you could get at least $9-$12 with much faster raises anywhere else, why would anyone choose us?

OP, do the opposite. Pay more and you'll make it worth the time for better people to stay. Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

Corporate, go talk to the unions and fix the pay scale before your company rots from under you. Your associates are the face of the company. You have to be competitive with the rest of the retail world to succeed.

I feel like, for the most part, the old saying is true: "you get what you pay for." Sure, you have some exceptions, but the reality is, if you want quality, dependable help, you need to attract that kind of help with the right pay. If it were me, I'd raise the starting pay to $15.00 an hour, with increases over time. However, my view is, IF you're going to get $15.00 an hour starting off, then you're going to have to meet reasonable standards/expectations. Raise the pay, but raise the expectations. Those that choose not to (in other words, goof off) OR are simply not suited physically or mentally for the job tasks expected of them can either be shuffled to other departments (until, perhaps, they find a department that clicks with them) or are terminated during the probationary period.

No more retaining "dead weight" because of the inability to hire since there should be plenty of applications coming in at $15.00 an hour starting pay.

Oh, and the higher wages attracting better quality help will pay for itself in the long term because stores will be full, fresh and providing great customer service (otherwise, again, not meeting the standards/expectations means that person is gone after three strikes) and customers will want to shop at Kroger more frequently as well as provide positive word of mouth.

TRUE........ EXCEPT one little thing.................that it has to be done IN CONJUNCTION with MORE HOURS BEING ALLOTED TO ALL DEPARTMENTS so that those good, conscientious, well-paid employees will have enough TIME and enough help to do the exceptional work they are expected to do!!

In other words, you could theoretically raise the starting wages to 20 dollars an hour, and have long-time employees working for 30+ dollars an hour, but if the store is still in dire need of help (not enough hours being give by ELMS) , as is the situation in most (if not all) Kroger stores right now, then you are still in serious trouble.

Funny you say that, since you have not once claimed to having a job. And if you read one of my other posts you would have noticed that I said I am a volunteer firefighter. So these "peanuts" and "pennies" mostly goes toward my vehicle so I can get to a site efficiently when I'm off the clock. Oh, and by the way, I don't get a paycheck from it. Like I said before, go on back to your hobby of a$$-f u c king dudes all day.

There should be some wage reductions. Management should get some pay increases for all the hard work we do and have to put up with

Camp fires? Oh no. You are sadly mistaken. More like what the 24-hour firefighters do. And no paycheck from it either. And I don't "browse" this site on company time.
