I have a team member who tries to help everyone. The thing is they try to hard. They try to help even when you don't ask or don't need it. This makes it to where I'm completely unable to think and I always end up screwing something up because of the distraction. They also get so close to me and invade my space. Their breath stinks while they are right up in my face. They also won't stay in the department they are assigned to, just to come over and over help. I want to say something, but I don't want to hurt their feelings or have them run to management complaining. So, what should I do? Should I go to management and explain this or should I tell this person to leave me alone? Some real advice here, please.
Just tell them 'Thanks, but its ok, i got this." And continue doing what you are doing. If they insist then go to management and seek their advice. Is this person special needs? If they are they may need more gentle persuasion to stay where they are supposed to be. Even special needs have to follow the rules and requests of their co-workers as long as its reasonable, safe, and legal.
No, they aren't special needs, but I do get the feeling they are either lonely or don't have many friends. It's like they feel they have to be helpful to be liked. I don't know. It just makes me a bit uncomfortable and really distracts me when I'm working.

Grow a pair already. Are you there to earn money for a living or worry about some ones feelings? Tell them to go back to their damn dept and youve got work to do.
You dont want to be rude about it though....because it can and will backfire. Be polite but firm if need be. You could say "i really need to get this done...and its a one person job, but thank you anyways. I've got this." Then continue.
Just say no think you I dont need help and I prefer to work alone and if I need hel you would be the first person I would ask. Just dont nice about it and they should be fine. I have a guy at work like this and he is annoying when it comes to wanting to help everyone but he got the idea when I said this.
