unfair hiring process...

i was recently hired by Kroger, for a decent position, with growth opportunity. went through orientation, did all the computer training, and was just waiting to get my schedule.

instead of a schedule, i got a call, saying that i would not be getting the position i was hired for, that someone else would be "Coming back", and get the position.

i was then offered a position for half the hours in the meat department. gee, thanks.

i've never seen a woman in the meat department.

i will never shop at Kroger again.

maybe you should contact an attorney that specializes in contract law...ask him or her what they think of your verbal contract or written contract if you have one

Did they pay you for your time in orientation and training?

From what you describe, it sounds like a union employee who was off for an extended period (possibly illness, etc) unexpectedly returned about the time you were brought in. This is a union negotiated protection for that member's job, unfortunately it put you and the company in an awkward position. They don't want to lose you but, by the union contract, can no longer offer you this returning employees job. They do the next best thing...offer you the available position they have (meat dept.) that has less hours.  I know this explanation doesn't make it better, but hopefully helps you understand the situation. Also, for what its worth, the store I work in has 3 female meat department employees and they enjoy the job.
Good Luck in whatever you decide to do
