Thinking of getting a night job with Krogers
Permalink

I have been searching for work for six months with no luck because of the miserable economy and high unemployment rate and have decided to soon pursue a night job as a stocker with Krogers in Houston, Texas. I have the following questions:

1. Will my Masters degree (MBA) and professonal work experience (3 years) at a high salary disqualify me for the job as someone who is 'overqualified'? Is it even possible to be identified as 'overqualified' for any job now considering the high unemployment rate?

2. What can I do to help improve my chances of being hired? I'm sure they have hundreds of resumes on file just like everyone else.

3. Minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 an hour. How much can I expect to make with Krogers?

4. Can I prepare a job application on paper, or do all job applications have to be submitted online?

5. Is it possible for someone to move up within Krogers to make decent money? Will my education help me advance?

6. Is working for Krogers an overall pleasureable experience? I worked retail in college and have learned to expect most managers to be conceited and assume everyone below them is some kind high school dropout or failure in life. I think that is complete crap, but you can't change an adult's perspective.

7. Is there anything I should know about working for Krogers?

Any answers would be appreciated!!

3. I started out making 25 cents more than minimum wage at the time. I'm not in Texas though, and it's been a few years.

5. I wouldn't expect to move up. I'm part time after four years. I know I could've gone for department head positions at other stores, but 30-45 mile commutes every day for what little raise I'd get isn't worth it. It's seniority based too,so I would've likely lost out to someone else.

6. If you do night stock, don't expect to have a life. Work every weekend, and if the store you're at is similar to the one I'm at,six day weeks and other crap, even though you're "part time". You'll probably get crappy days off like I do,Mondays and Wednesdays..when I work six days,I only get Mondays off.Managers do treat people like crap.

With your work experience and educational background I think Kroger would want you to try the management program.

Its a filler job. With your MBA when the economy gets better I'd be looking for something other than putting Fruit Loops & Vienna Sausage on the shelf.
