Well today I was scheduled to come in and even called in to double check on my schedule. I went to work and hung my coat up. Said "hi" to the head manager and went to punch in. As I was punching in, the assistant manger was walking downstairs. He didn't say anything to me as I was punching in. After punching in I go to the customer service desk and ask what it is that need me to do at the moment and as the lady at customer service tells me what to do, the head manager calls and ask for me to report upstairs. Now, let me back up for a minute. Saturday I worked and at the end of my shift I asked if I was scheduled to go to work on Sunday and the lady at customer service said yes, I asked for it off because of church and she said sure. Time passes by; Monday comes and I call and ask about my schedule and they tell me to come in Tuesday(today). Back to the Assist. Manager, He tells me to take a seat and does not close the door (unprofessional) and tells me because I have requested the past two Sundays off for church, I am being let go. Some how they got the word I said Saturday that I was going to call in sick. I don't even talk to anyone their so someone made that up. Anyways I want to fight this however, I don't know what to do. People are telling me to call and speak with the Assist. Manager, the one who fired me and explain to him exactly why I request Sunday's off, even when scheduled and later then get it off. As far as I'm concerned he was an ass and don't really want to speak to him at all. As a family we just started church and at the time when Hired I didn't list that because we just started after the first week of being hired.
first of all why are you asking someone at customer service what to do??? You shouldnt have to ask any one what to do. you should come in and know your job? how long have you been there because even new employees where i work know what to do because management gives them a "routine" you must not be a very good worker for someone to tell you everytime you come in ask someone what to do. i guess they dont want you screwing anything up. u deserve to be fired
Well, you are in retail - YOU went to Kroger, Kroger didn't come to you. Unfortunately, weekends are a busy time in retail and you being low person on the totem pole-that's when they need you. You were not honest with yourself or Kroger when you failed to mention you don't do Sundays...consider another career chioce outside of retail
wow!! fired?!?!? that is clearly kind of harsh no matter even if you did not let them know when hired that you preferred Sundays off! They could have at least discussed it with you,as in maybe letting you go to church but coming in after to work,or anything besides firing you, seriously!!Even if it didn't turn in your favor, you still would have had the job most likely unless you would have quit because of it,which proves maybe it wasn't the best job for you after all.well I wish you the best, rather it be getting your job back or finding one that is flexible with your schedule:)

I lol'd. You should ALWAYS ask a manager or another employee if there is something that needs to be done FIRST. Just because you KNOW your job doesn't mean you should ignore what might need to be done the second you walk in the door. I work in produce, and once I walk in that door in the morning, I know what needs to be done first, but that doesn't mean I don't ask my co-workers if there is anything THEY would like me to start on first.
Call your union, they can't just fire you over a day that you were given off by a manager. UFCW is a damn good union, they will fight for you, and most likely get your job back, especially since you were fired for pretty much no reason at all. But for the future, ask for Sundays off, or write down specific times that you can work on Sundays.
that was a little harsh.... At my store they don't get you into a routine. They expect to baby you . THEY COMPLAIN CUZ THEY HAVE TO TELL U WHAT TO DO However . There is no routine until you get use to the place.....
Retail work is not the place to be if you need to go to church every Sunday.
Besides, does your church hold service from 6am until 11:59pm on Sunday? When can you make it in on Sunday.
Life is about give and take. It looks like you took a lot here and gave little to nothing in return.
I am not even going to mention the possible aspect of other employees saying "Hey, how come so and so gets every Sunday off? I got a God too you know."
I wasn't there when they called you into the office but you might want to ask for your job backk w/ conditions. But sometimes it isn't good to go back to a place you are not wanted.
