I am just an old meat dog and can not say for sure what they can and can not do, but you need to seriously contact your union rep and have them therefor this. Again I could be wrong but do not believe that they have any right to make you pay for anything a customer steals or walks out without paying. They could demote you or something but can not force you to pay. By doing that , then they set a standard of making everycasheir pay for every error or problem that comes up from accounting or theft. You are union and this is one of the things you NEED to GET them INVOLVED IN.

I went and ask my boss the head of my department and I was told that is part of the system.
Basically the cashiers are monitored via computer and if something suspicious happens the computer saves and watches the employee for it to happen again
And if it does the employee is watched till enough evidence is gather to terminate.
Part of the ploy is getting the employee to admit fault which agreeing to pay back will do.

So Your fired your friend is fired they just want to be sure they are protected and you can't sue.

Employees don't make up for cash shortages. That's a violation of company policy. Don't pay it. But, pay attention. Uscan is serious business, it's not a lot of work but it's a mental game.

You can win at uscan just by standing there. Don't feel guilty, it's what the job requires.

I'm a cashier and I would never pay back the amount. I've had people run off on me on uscan, both on accident and on purpose. I do feel bad about it when it happens, but it happens. Busy helping 5 other people, the iPAD doesnt always chime when items are removed so they have the ability to get away. Once, I was cleaning registers and came back to the station to find a 4 foot look receipt tape of over-and-over transactions buying gift cards, most likely with a fake or stolen credit card. I got back what I could but it's not worth losing sleep over, just learn from mistakes.

OMG i get this all the time,,, and you know what i do, i just either void the whole order off, are do a store coupon... running uscan is no joke, ad when ur helping one person and that damn thing sound all you can do is bypass so you can keep helping the other customer.... its crazy,,, but when ever that happen dont call the manager void it off or store coupon it, hit store coupon the amount ---- grocery or what ever its from hit the code and BAM... or do 10702 and the amount....

If you are voiding off a ton of orders or using the store coupon code- they are watching you. You can void off orders left and right, but if you have to do more then one a month you are unqualified to run uscan.

If people are leaving without paying, you have failed at your job.

Use a store coupon too much red flags go up. If it's the same checker, and a high dollar, I bet you are on a list? How do I know? I've seen a girl get fired for using the store coupon code on uscan one too many times. A 15 year employee with Kroger was fired.

I understand one or two orders a year, but all the time? OMG! no

If you can't handle helping more then one customer at a time, you should not be on uscan. Do yourself a favor before you lose your job and let your supervisor know that you need to work some place else.

It's like the booth, the phone rings, a manger calls your name, an employee is at the desk wanting keys or something else, a customer wants to return an item and a baby is crying. You need to multitask and if you can't do that you need to find another place to work.

This was attempted at the McDonalds that my wife worked at. I pulled the store manager out onto the floor and had a bit of a talk with him..

I told him I had 2 phone numbers that he would not want me to call...

#1 is the EEOC (800) 828-1120
#2 is the BBB I only have the MI number for that one...

Anyway, I told him to go ahead and fire my wife for the shortage on her register...that she would be more than happy to collect the unemployment from the unlawful termination.

They CANNOT force you to pay that money, They can however fire you for excessive shortages.

the one great thing about kroger is the union.... yes it is a big thing with people walking off,,, and what are you left to do void off a order that some one already took but didnt finish paying and messing up the whole inventory system, or couponing it off,,, store coupon can get you in trouble but its better than voiding off the whole order,,, you can be getting watch, from management but if your being watch then what about the other cashiers,,,, kroger does a daily till audit and a weekly till audit,, and yes it shows the number of coupons and scan rites and voids,,, but when you work at a uscan that has more than four systems its hard to keep track of every one especially if your doing WIC.. talk to your manager first and see what he would want you to do... if he want you to void ok,,, but more than likly he would say try not to let that happen... the kroger that i work at the uscan is always short because people will leave with out paying and the uscan attendent will just cash it out without putting cash in the drawal,,kroger gives stores alot of money to cover shortages, and stuff like that.... you have some managers that care and some dont,,, if you feel that you might get introuble get some one from the customer service office and ask themm,,,, my store have to many voids but untill it becomes a problem thats when we notifi cashiers,,, who know why they was voiding,,, thats why when they void we have them write why on the paper... some can be from price check,,,, no money, walk off, etc etc,,,,, you will not get fired for this,, so who ever says you can then there wrong,,, as long as ur not voiding off bing orders for ur family that a couple of my workers did and got fired than your fine...

Unfortunately, this is our diversity dollars at work. "She", being the unqualified, does not understand the people things or her employees. No, she can't make you pay it back.
Termination? Yes, but enjoy the time off with unemployement and make sure you shop the store ! You too will be driving a Cadillac Escalade and eating better than you ever have in your life. Oh, did I forget to mention the free Medical/Dental from S.S. and all the discounts from electric, gas, cell phone, and cable companies that your going to be eligible for?
Girl - YOUR doing it wrong in life ! As a matter of fact, we all are-

are we not being a little sarcastic here? Maybe a little envious that you/we do not get all the freebies from screwing up? Maybe you ot to do it and get the same benefits that this person will get. And when you do then let me know so I can escape my prison sentence here at kroger. 20 years served and 15 more until paroled.

Oh great, another food stamp person buying lobster tails at Kroger, just what i wanted to hear.

There are very strict rules at the state and federal level with regard what an employer may and may NOT deduct from your paycheck.

An thief stealing money from the store (by walking out) is NOT one of them.

Can you imagine if you worked at a fuel center with alot of drive offs? You'd never get paid at all!

They can't do that... not on any level.
