Kroger, Shell Oil Company Expand Fuel Deal

4 Michigan Markets Receive Gas Discounts, 2 Locally

POSTED: 9:58 am EDT July 7, 2010
UPDATED: 10:56 am EDT July 7, 2010

Shell Oil Co. has begun offering gas discounts to regular Kroger Co. shoppers in four Michiganmag-glass_10x10.gif markets, the first expansion of the companies' team-up.

Kroger loyalty card holders now can get 10 cents off a gallon at Shell stations in Detroit, Flint, Lansing and Saginaw for every $100 spent in Kroger stores.

Kroger spokeswoman Meghan Glynn said Wednesday that the companies are evaluating the next step in the program that began in February in Cincinnati and Dayton; Ohio; San Diego; Nashville and Knoxville, Tenn.

Gas discounts are popular incentives for shopper loyalty amid tough grocery competition.

Midwest superstore chain Meijer Inc., based in Grand Rapids, Mich., is among competitors that offer fuel breaks.

Anyone know anything about this and how it works and is working? In the Dallas area and not many Kroger fuel stores around and our store has no fuel and only fuel center around is about 15 miles away. But a lot of Shell stations and 7Elevens that carries shell gas.

Could this become nation wide  and will it conflict with places where there is a fuel center and a shell station on the same corner or intersection?

Kroger And Shell Kickoff Grocer Rewards Program

14/02/2010

Rewards Program Allows Customers to Use Their Kroger Loyalty Card To Fill Their Tank for Less at Kroger Fuel Centers and Participating Shell Stations.

Cincinnati and Houston The Kroger Co., the nations largest traditional supermarket retailer, and Shell, the no. 1 selling gasoline brand in the U.S., have teamed up to launch a customer loyalty grocer rewards program in several U.S. cities. The rewards program provides shoppers the exclusive opportunity to earn savings on fuels when using their Kroger family of brands loyalty card at their local Kroger or Ralphs stores.

Beginning on February 15, Kroger and Shell will roll out the grocer rewards program in Cincinnati, Dayton, Knoxville, Nashville and San Diego. Customers in participating markets can earn points and redeem them for savings on gasoline at Kroger Fuel Centers and participating Shell stations. Customers can earn rewards including a minimum of 10 cents off a gallon of gasoline for every 100 Fuel Points they earn by using their free loyalty card when purchasing a variety of products inside Kroger and Ralphs stores. This offer is valid up to 35 gallons per fuel purchase. Offers may vary per market and plans for future rollouts of the program will be determined following the launch of these five markets.

"Krogers loyalty card program is unmatched in the industry, providing customers with savings on groceries, gasoline, general merchandise, pharmacy needs and Kroger brands, said Jeff Fike, director of fuel marketing for Kroger. Teaming up with Shell allows us to provide even more savings and rewards to our customers, which we know is important, especially in todays economic times."

"Approximately 40 percent of all U.S. households hold a loyalty card from one of Krogers family of stores and more than 80 percent of Americans live within five miles of a Shell station, said Dan Little, North America fuels marketing manager for Shell Oil Products U.S. As leading national brands, the exclusive alliance between Shell and Kroger will allow customers to earn savings on everyday purchases and redeem them for high-quality Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines."

To participate in the grocer rewards program, customers in participating markets will need to use their active Kroger Plus Card or Ralphs rewards Card, or apply for a loyalty card, which is free. Applications are readily available at any Kroger or Ralphs store or by visiting www.kroger.com - opens in new window.

Customers earn one Fuel Point for every dollar spent at participating Kroger stores when they use their loyalty card. To help shoppers build up their savings quickly, Fuel Points can also be earned by purchasing prescriptions or gift cards at Kroger. With every two eligible prescriptions or with a purchase of $50 in gift cards from Krogers in-store Gift Card Malls, loyalty card holders receive 100 Fuel Points. Visit any Kroger or Ralphs store for details.

Fuel Points from participating stores will be automatically added to loyalty card accounts and will be reflected on the customers grocery receipt after every purchase. Customers also have the option of looking online on their My Kroger or My Ralphs page to check how many Fuel Points they have earned. Fuel Points must be used within a designated time period.

Customers may redeem their Fuel Points at Kroger Fuel Centers or participating Shell stations by swiping their participating loyalty card at the pump, manually entering their card number or by entering their alternate ID, which will initiate the fuel savings. Customers with questions about the grocer rewards program can call the Kroger Customer Service telephone number at 1-800-576-4377, or contact Shell Customer Service at 1-888-GO-SHELL for participating Shell locations.

that's interesting.
I wonder if they will expand to other markets
My store has a fuel center and it's nice to get the 10 cents off.

Only thing I heard was that it could be available in all kroger KMAs in time.  interesting thing is that there are many areas in the Dallas area where there are no fuel centers but shell stations. Know of one store where they have a fuel center and a shell station on the same corner.

The program has just finished pilot stages and is supposed to roll out enterprise wide (not sure of the time fram on this).  There will be select shell stations that will participate based on wether or not there is a kroger fuel station in proximity.  For instance one side of town kroger with a fuel center so no shell participation, but the other side of town kroger with no fuel center so there will be a few shell stations to offer the discount.  There will be a phamplet to let customers know what shell stations in town honor the plus card and of course signage.

i'm in michigan and have used this twice - i think it's great and recommend it to my customers. only thing i dislike is that shell is a bit more expensive, so after the 10cent reduction its only about 4 or 5 cents cheaper than everyone else, but hey it's still something.. just the advertising makes it sound better than it really is biggrin

We've had a partnership in Tennessee since the end of fall last year. We're less than half a mile from a Shell station and it's killed our sales. In the first quarter alone, we lost nearly a week's worth of profit.
