I would like to say welcome to the world of Kroger but then one must consider that it is not Kroger. It is the world of Retail in general. Been with Kroger for over 20 years and got a market to run about 5 years ago. Been stuck in that rut routine for almost 10 years as a market assistant and wondered if I was ever going to get one or be stuck in a dead end position. Not going to say that this is a perfect dream job but then there is not a lot of them out there and unless you are a department head or key department backup or employee position, you will always have struggles in any retail grocery store.
so tell us all. are you just going to be anonymous or give us an age/ sex and location of where you are and the dead end position you are in?
I kinda switch back and forth on this topic. I'm the back up deli manager. I don't get an compensation for being back up but 2 weeks out of the year. Yet I'm expected to do my managers job on a daily basis, while she does administrative things. Or works with key retailing.
Right now I'm just about ready to give it up and go back to being a clerk, but without some kind of experience there is no wa to move forward in kroger.
On the other hand, kroger pays a respectable wage compared to other grocery retailers. My insurance is really good. I get time off and paid vacations. They also can't do too many horrible things to me because of the union. So while i do tend to complain, there are worse things out there.

Just have to ask this. Does your local contract let you collect the Deli manager pay rate when She is our for those weeks or vacation? In ours ( local540 meat department in Dallas) If I as the meat manager works less than 4 days in any week, then my back-up gets my pay rate. Not only that but if anyone has to perform the tasks of any hire classification of work, for more than 3 days, then they get that pay rate for that time worked.
