at my store, there are three seperate exits/entrances. all are marked, by signs as such. management, however, has taken it upon themselves, to remove the aotomatic 'eye' from the inside, so you cannot exit by two of these doors, without manually pushing them open. they say it's to slow down shoplifters, from running out the door.
i say, its a major safety viloation. if there is a emergancy, and people need to get out, the will head for the nearist exit sign they see. but two out of three, wont let them out, without pushing them open. people in a panic, wil freak, thinking they are trapped.
o brought it up before, in casulal conversation with a co-manager before, and he said, "nothing is going to happen"yeah, thats what the titanic crew thought too.
i just think this messure to save kroger a few dollars from shoplifters, could indanger customers

sounds like an issue you could mention to the fire marshall in your town.  I know in some places (maybe everywhere) there are rules that doors of some buildings must remain unlocked as long as people are inside.  I know technically the sliding doors are unlocked, however as you said, in an emergency not everyone would know to slide or push the door and it could cause problems.

This also could be a matter to take up with OSHA.  http://www.osha.gov/

mention it to your manager and I bet the doors will be opened again.   not sure if this is a violation, but it sounds like it could be

Ok just like every Korger store i worked at in the morning everyday we have local firemen getting grocerys for the firehouse to feed the boys, not sure if this is the case for you at your store , however if you do point it out to them and they can tell thier Chief some times the Chief is with them and they will do something about it, cause thats never an issue at the stores i work at. However tell magangement its the companys ass if people get hurt or killed do to that and when the company knows it was him who did it then the managaer drops dead.
