Meat clerk duties

I work in the meat dept for alittle over a year and a half and I am just a meat clerk nothing more. My manager tells me I have to cut meat like strips, ribeye, and other steaks if a customer ask me to. But I don't get pay extra for it, I am stuck at 7.45 right now. I got mad and told him to find out from the union if I am suppose to or not. I would of called them but I rather not have the store manager up my butt. But he said that I have to from what they said. But I don't believe it one bit. From what others have told me that I don't have to cut meat. So now I have been cutting meat for customers when they ask "tell me to" like a freaking meat cutter. So I am wonder if I am suppose to cut meat for them or not. I know from what my manager told me is that I don't have to cut for the case thats all. Its bs that I get 6 ten cent raises and I pay the union almost 8 dollars now and they don't help me at all. Does anyone know if I am suppose to or not? I even look online and the websites I vist doesn't say meat clerks cut meat the only thing it says is to grind meat. Thanks and this is for the state of Indiana south side of indy.

Technically, meat clerks responsibilitys are to wrap, work lunchmeat, and clean the meat shop at night.  However, that isn't necessarily the case.  Just be advised that if you do learn how to cut and you are not considered a cutter and you get hurt, you may have a harder time getting Kroger to cover as a result.

I work in the meat shop and have learned to cut meat because at the time, we only had two others in the store who were trained on how to cut (Dept Head and Backup).  Our fulltime cutter left and the job bid was held up due to realignment within the district, so I had to pick up the slack and do his job until the bid was filled.

In all honesty though, I advise everybody who comes back there to try to learn how to cut.  If anything, if you are ever unhappy with Kroger and want to look for work in another grocery store in your area (sans Walmart, no meat cutters there), you would be surprised what other stores would pay for somebody they don't have to train on how to cut.  Kroger is tied in through the union, but other stores that aren't could pay more and you would likely get steady hours.

You aren't "supposed" to be cutting, but use it to your advantage.  Learning how to cut meat is a skill that a lot of people don't have, so my advice is learn how to do it.  It could be worth it later on down the road.

Thanks for the advice but the thing is that I have a friend who took the test and passed and even went to the two classes to become a meat cutter and he was cutting for the case and everything. But they never gave him his 3 dollar raise like they are suppose too. And soon enough they put him on lunchmeat for good and he got sick of it and found another job. But he never went to the union for it but I am not sure why. So now they want me to go to successful training and I am worry about not getting my raise like how he didn't because I do need a raise since I have to provide for my family. The thing is I will go to the union if they don't give me my raise but then it could get ugly and they could try to get me fired for bs reasons.
They hired a meat cutter from marsh of all places and they said he has 30 years of experience which doesn't show at all. I myself cut better then him not boosting myself but I do. He is slow and the quality is shameful. Also he has never wrap before I guess marsh they have a machine to wrap itself. So he don't know how to wrap.
But what really gets to me is I don't think hes been here for 6 months yet and he takes like every other weekend off and has so far taken weeks off at a time which a total of 3. But I ask for two saturdays off and I don't get them. I don't ask many days off only if my family is having a get together and I got the same saturdays off last year so I don't get it. I am thinking of going to sam's club which is the only place left I believe around here that still cuts meat. I don't like walmart because its all stocking which I don't mind but I like to wrap and cut also. Only thing keeping me here is the insurance I guess is very good.
Also I have a year of seniority over the new meat cutter but I guess he is such a big cry baby that now they will give him what he wants. He even went to the store manager to tell her I wasn't helping him break down the truck. Even though my manager told me to tell him he has to break it down and for me to keep everything full. So the store mananger told me to break down the truck also which makes me look bad and he had 3 chances to ask me to help him and he didn't. So the next day I was piss and told my mananger about it and he went to the store manager and she said it should only take 1 to do that. And I was like WTF u told me to help him. I just don't get it anymore. I guess thats my rant lol thanks for listening.

Must be the differences in the contract.  I never had to watch a video or even got a raise (although I should have filed for backup pay when the dept head or backup went on vacation).  Most everything I did was learning from the other two that I work with.

I don't know how your contract reads but if you are entitled to extra pay by all means bring it to your managers attention.  If that fails, get in contact with your union representative.  Taking it to your manager first knowing that the union could get involved will likely solve all issues.  If your manager is vindictive, going to the union first probably isn't in your best interest.

As for the other meat cutter situation, I worked at a local grocery store that shut down in this area before being hired on at Kroger.  One of the meat cutters from the store I worked at got hired on at another Kroger and the story sounds kinda similar.  I've always said Kroger does better training their own people from the ground up rather than hiring from the outside because you have to work out all the bugs with whoever is hired outside the company.

classic lazy, union worker.... you got a job, in a meat shop, just go cut some meat, and stop trying to read the fine print on your job description to get out of 5 minutes of work....  I would love to know which kroger you work at so I can avoid it like the plague.....furious

If you are just a meat clerk you do not have to cut. My fiance is a meat department back up and I asked him. He said unless you are training to be a cutter it would be in your best interest not to cut anything, because if you get hurt Kroger won't pay disability or cover your expenses for anytime off. Also, if you are just a clerk they will do everything possible to not pay you for cutting. So, if I would tell them that unless they're going to pay you a cutter's pay that you're not going to cut.

That's funny, at my store, everybody in the Meat Dept. does everything.

Except for one person.  She just wraps and complains.

a meat clerk's duties are to do what the supervisor deligates you to do, weather it be cutting simple portions of meat for your customers, or cleaning the floor. If you don't like what you are doing, Quit. If you're not happy you don't want to stay with Kroger, and i am sure Kroger doen't want a disconted employee.  so get with  the program.  Do the job you are asked to do, or quit.  mr. meathead2012

Are you just cutting basic stuff for customers or doing a full cut? I am only a clerk at my store. Being trained for Management relief. I do the second cut and always do the third cut(my store does an actual full 3rd cut(larger than second cut) at 5pm. I feel the same way too, no pay raise. No promotion. We just hired a guy who has 20 years of experience as a meat cutter. He was hired as a Meat Clerk, yet he is payed more than twice than I and he doesnt know how to do anything. He doesnt even know how to cut most meats. Or know what they actually are called. If a customer asks for a special type of cut, he always asks me what it is and usually I h ave to cut it for the customer. He also is horribly slow at everything, even cutting and he is really a sloppy cutter. His cuts look horrible. Nice guy, but ticks me off.
