kroger giving me a guilt trip
Permalink

One day at Kroger I just got off an 8 hour shift and not long after I get off I get a call from one of the managers. He wanted me to work the next day and I tried to tell him I had plans which luckily I was able to reschedule. He didn't listen to me and says "I'm not gonna keep calling you if you're just gonna keep saying no!" and I never called in when it came to work. So he gives me a guilt trip and he made me feel so bad I just finally told him i would go in. I'm just wonderin is there any necessary action I could take when it comes to this situation? I'm not sure if there is or not. and another FYI He's also been rude to the employees and the customers too.

Get caller ID and don't answer the phone if it says Kroger or if you don't recognize the number.

They can't force you to go in on your day off. You didn't apply to an "always on call" job. They don't pay enough. :P

nothing you can do, but not answer the phone when they  call, and ignore the guilt attemps. if they would hire more people they wouldn't have the problem, so  it's not your fault.
they used to call me in so much i changed my phone number

Give an inch and they will take a mile. I also agree with paying a little extra for caller id.

Just tell him once again after he cuts you off and gives his pity party response, "It is my day off and I have very important plans already made. I am sorry." Then be quite allowing the dead air to be heard between you. If he goes "but... but...' say No and hang up.

Why do people continue to fall for pressure tactics? Stand up and fight for yourself. it will be ok... trust me

Some tips on dealing with this:

1. If you have a cell phone, give them your cell number in place of your current number.  Most cell phones can be editable to where you can name your contacts.  Add the store phone number and other extensions into your phone book.

2. When they call, don't answer it.  I think that has already been covered in this thread.

3. They are not going to stop calling you.  A friend of mine was given that threat and was called again the next day.  If somebody calls off, management has to go down seniority in asking people to come in.  If you are skipped, you have a right to claim hours and backpay.  It sucks, but it is a necessary evil.

4. Another threat I have heard from our previous manager involved telling me that he was going to hire more people and cut our hours.  Sometimes this would happen, but few would actually make it past the 45 day probation, so it became a neverending cycle.  You might see your hours get cut in this case, but the phone is still going to be ringing.

5. If your manager gets really pissy when talking to you and gets confrontational, tell him/her that you have plans, you are not going to change them, and if it continues ask for a shop steward and that you are filing a grievance for harrassment.

Hope this helps.

Kroger doesn't care if you ever have plans. If you're not scheduled that night and they ask you to come in they can rightfully schedule you for that night and then write you up for not coming in even if it was your scheduled night off. it's happened to us more than once. Invest in caller ID and just don't answer your phone. They can't write you up for not answering your phone unless you're on-call mgmt.bleh

Unless you have voice mail in which they just leave a message there and expect you to get it.

Seriously, when you have plans on your days off STOP ANSWERING THE PHONE! There isn't any course of action you can take against a manager for calling you and then giving you a guilt trip for not wanting to come in. Just ignore the phone calls.

If you tell them no and they call back threaten to report them to police. I'd believe thats harassment.

Ya know what, If a manager or anybody for that matter gets ****ty with you and your not wrong, do what you can to get their ass fired.

Its not fair to say people are ****ty, but it is fair to say sometimes people can be ****ty,  Maybe if those people lost their jobs and couldn't pay their bills and maybe ended up out on the street in the cold, well, maybe those people wouldn't be so ****ty.

I would just tell that manager that he can call you all he wants but the answer is going to be no.  There is absolutely no reason that you need to given a reason for this.  You could even tell them that you gave nothing better to do, but since it is your day off, you are not going to work today, thats what you should do.

There is a schedule, schedules are made for a reason, this reason is so that employees know when they are to work, about 99% of the time an employee will have atleast one day off during the week.  So the said employee should not be expected to work that day, by management or anyone else.  If someone wanted to threaten you over not working on your day off, perhaps that someone needs to find a loaded gun and proceed to shoot theirself.

And well, yeah, that is pretty much the way that goes.  Have a Nice Day.

To the person that said call the police, yeah your absolutely right, that is harrasment. I would call the police, using the office phone, file charges, and then that manager would lose their job, HA HA HA. Some people are just insecure.
