One day I was working for 2-3 hours without a break so when I had the time I would ask management what time my break would be and they said I could go to break and then say "And for the record I HATE it when you ask me when your break is."

yeah, front end is notorious for giving breaks late. there have been times when i've gone 4 hours without a break, times when i've taken lunch and last break together, or gotten my last break 30mins before the end of my shift, or one time 16mins before the end of my shift... and you can't just go home or they will shaft you on that 15mins.

Sometimes they've asked me to go early but normally they will be late. I've never went a day without getting my breaks though.

It all depends on the grace of your supervisor. They will get in trouble if they don't give them to you, but nothing says when they have to give them to you. It's just common for breaks to be given every 2-3 hours.

I normally just work until someone says ""BagBoy" go to break". Don't get me wrong... there have been times i've been tempted to just clock out for break without so much as a word.... It can be frustrating to wait sometimes especially when you get the supervisors who "forget" people are working or think you're working a shift you aren't.

Best of luck dealing with your supervisor, Anon.

The front end is suppose to have a bar chart showing the approximate times for your breaks.  The scheduling of breaks and lunches on the front end has to be more structured than it is in other departments.  In other departments as long as there's enough help you can take your breaks when it's most convenient for you.

then your either a fool, or your union has the worst contract in history. If you work 4 hours you get a 15, you work up to 6 1/2 you get a 15 and optional lunch, you work 7 or more you get 2 15's and a lunch..

That's our contract You need to check with yours. If your not getting your breaks talk to management.

Well its kinda hard when u have morons working with you and you have all this work to do and little help. We use to have enough people working to where we can take our breaks and lunches on time like every two hours which is what ours is. But now everyone quit and they can't find anyone to hire and to top it off we have no hours we had plenty of hours when we had the help but now no help, no hours. Thats bull****, They want me to do all this **** in 5, or some times 7 hours when in fact it would take me and a second shift guy both 8 hours each to get it done. No by myself no second shift and only 6 hours to do everything. If they want to say anything I will say give me more hours and hire some ****ing help jackass.
I always thought more business more hours, we have beaten our goal from last year but still no hours, and with this come up to customer service and ****ing bag for 10-30mins at a time. **** them all.

It's pretty bad in the deli where I work.  There's no set time for breaks, the person who came in first gets a break first.  The problem is that some people who come in ahead of me don't want to take their breaks until really late, like after 5 hours for their first break.  I like to get my break about 3 hours in.  Some people are nice if you ask to take your break ahead of them and say yes, but some get huffy and act like you're lazy for wanting your break.

Also, starting at 6 hours, you're supposed to get 2 breaks.  But if you only work 6 hours, they act like you should willingly sacrifice one of your breaks.  I'm sorry that I was only scheduled to work 6 hours.. but I'm allowed to take two and I'm going to take two.

I work in the Midsouth division and here you get only one 15 minute break if you are scheduled 6 hours or less.  If you're scheduled 7 hours, which never happens, you get two 15 minute breaks.  If 7 1/2 hours or more you get two breaks and a lunch.  As far as taking your break goes, just tell them you're taking break.  As long as there's enough help on the counter then they shouldn't have a problem with it.  If they can wait 5 hours they can wait 15 more minutes.

I work in the bakery department and we never have any problem with people taking their breaks before others.  Just because someone comes in before somebody else doesn't mean they have to take their break first.  I know deli is different because you wait on more customers but it still shouldn't be a problem.  If someone who's been there five hours without a break complains because you're taking a break after only 3 hours just tell them well, you should have taken one earlier.  It's really inconsiderate of them to put off their break and hold everybody else up

my biggest beef about breaks as a manager is when all the sudden somebody goes on a break then a few minutes later i notice somenbody else is missing as well.  its like What The Hell!  Can't you people wait until so and so gets back or coordinate with one another a little bit better so you do not double up taking breaks.  then most all people in my department need to go pee  every two hours or so. damn!  i do my duty before i go to work and then when i get home.  and i love when they ask to go pee so off they go and come back in a couple minutes then 5 minutes later they go on break!  Couldn't you fricken' wait!  LOL.  its crazy - i never seen people poop and pee more than my dog does and his nickname is Sir Poop-A-Lot!  I feel like a kindergarten teacher when they come up to me every so often and ask for their 'hall pass' to use the potty.  and here's one more bitch i gotta make on this subject...  well maybe two...  dumbass employee #1 goes away on their break then comes back in 15 minutes but takes 5 minutes more to get their ass back out to work yet dumbass employee #2 has to take off for their break as soon as they see dumbass employee #1 come back to the department.  can't you wait a couple of seconds till the dude who just came back is like.. back!

i could go on and on and on about the crazy circus like atmosphere that goes on where I work.  i just laugh to myself about it during my shift and i then grab a couple 24 oz beers on the way out the door to head home so i can tell my family and friends about the fools who work for me and around me at kroger.  i can not wait until i leave this company so I can post some crazy ass crap that I have personally experienced but I can not as of now b/c who might read it on here.  some of the stories i can tell would literally blow some of you away!  it at times makes me wonder how some of these people escaped from the insane asylumn and got jobs with kroger.

Hm that's strange, I'm not sure why you guys are allowed 2 breaks after 7 hours and we're allowed 2 breaks after 6 hours, but that's the way it works in our store.  You're supposed to get 2 breaks.  It's just that sometimes management glares at you or says "do you really need to take your second one?  Really?  Fine." if you try to take it.  I don't care what they say, I always take all the breaks I'm entitled to.  A few other  people don't.  Of course management praises them and acts like they're amazing and they act like you're the laziest piece of crap they ever came across if you take your two breaks on a 6 hour shift.

Your coworkers sound more reasonable than mine.  A lot of times if I ask to go on break ahead of someone else they start to say things like "I haven't had a break for 5 hours!  You've only been here 3!  You have to wait your turn!" If you were to tell them "you should have taken yours earlier" and try to go on break anyway, management sides with them.  Not all my coworkers are like that.  Some do say "sure, go ahead" but I can think of several who yell about how long they've been there.

I don't ask permission to go on break or lunch.  I just say I'm going and leave.  Of course I never do it if it's going to put someone in a bind if I leave.

So just how long have these coworkers worked for Kroger?

10 to 15 years.  They're all pretty old. I've been there 6 years.  I wish they would just take their breaks so I could have mine.  I don't like getting into arguments with them, but I get tired. :(

10 to 15 years? Is that all?  I've got them beat by several years.  You have my permission to take your break whenever you feel like it, but only if there are enough people to watch the counter.

We usually have 3 people in the deli.  So having enough people to watch the counter isn't a problem. (Especially on slow weekdays!) I'll tell them I have your permission. ;)
