who are some of the good managers you have worked under, and who are the bad?

my first, was wayne renyolds.looked, and acted like M off the three stooges. a bad tempered , rude *******, with no sense of humor, or people skills

BUT, he did know his ****, ran a tight store, and was very honest and fair. so i diddn't LIKE him, i respected him. he eventuall got promoted up

geffory lathem was lieing, back stabbing, weasel. he had no hand in store management, he let his hand picked inmates run the assylem. we called them the 'click"

they could break any rule, and even LAWS, long as lathem never had to deal with any problem. drugs ran rampert through the store during his time. yet a lot of people loved him, because he hid behind a fake relgious cover. lathem was forcefully transferd to a lower position, in a crappy inner city store, for doctering people's hours, to eliminate overtime.

laurie king was a  blip on the radar screen. she was there only six months, as a training program, to move into upper managemt. she wasn't going to be their long, and it showed, but at least she left people alone, and things ran pretty well

trish wheeler, was hated by everybody, thou most were afraid to show it. she was  petty , a rumor started, arrogent, and loved to pick on people she diddn't like. our turn over rate went sky high under her, and we lost all the long term people, including me. she made it clear who she liked, and who she diddn't and never even attempted to be fair. funny part is, even the few she liked, hated her, because she was so moody, and rude even to those she liked. she was moved two weeks after she fired me, thou i don't know where. she had a very bad reputation with upper management, but had somekind of pull, because nobody dared to oppose her.

so i had one good, even if he was rude, one OK, and two scumbags.

what kind of managers have you worked under ?

manegers, now, not co managers, thats another topic

I have been pretty lucky in the past10 years only 1 that was not fit to be a bagger and I think he is working at cvs now. Yhe zone manager is a really smart guy and is on top of his stores which is bad for us at moments but he runs a tight ship.

My pet peeve when it comes to managers and co-managers is when they don't introduce themselves when they first come to the store.  I'm on my 5th store manager and lord knows how many co-managers I've seen come and go and only a handful have come up and said,  "Hello, I'm so and so.  I'm the new manager/ co-manager."

Every where you go you're going to have good managers and....not so good managers. My store manager is actually pretty good. He tells it like it is and not a whole lot of people do that. I can't stand it when people sugar coat everything. Ghaaa!

Good points, Oboro! By virtue of what the job entails, it is impossible to be a salaried manager AND a good, cool friend to everybody.......In the end, I agree with your view:

Don't sugar coat stuff. I'd rather take a slap in the face over a knife in the back, six days a week and twice on Sundays~

Well i have to mention somethings of bad managers I have worked for. I will not mention names but if you know what im talking about you know who they are.     There was a lady who did all the cleaning in the store and the offices upstares, now one day she found crystal meth hidden in the office of this manager, this manager has been known to do drugs, nothing was done about it. Ok follow me on this if they found drugs in my locker what do you think what would have happend? I can tell you they would have thrown me BALLS first out into the parking lot! There has been a few managers laying the pipe to a few female employees in the computer room thats right next to the office, well way to go on taking care of the booty in the store. Im sure you all have alot of stores like this but its just te way it is at Kroger land.

OH yes. I can well relate....We have a female assistant mgr who was balling a former co, now she's blowing a current co.....she got busted for a felony D.U.I. last year, it was all over the local news, EVERYBODY---staff and customers alike--were fully aware of this,,,,and NOTHING was done to her!

Got a bad one for ya, and she's the current store manager.

Our store manager (I'll just say first initial "J") Jenkins bullies the fuel center all the time. She sits up in her office like she has nothing to do on the sales floor and thinks that sitting up there in her office like a security guard is how you run a store. No past manager has ever done this and we all got along fine and got our stuff done. All she does is harass us instead of doing any actual work. In fact, the first words out of her mouth when she first came to the fuel center wasn't "Hi, how are you", it was "Where's your mask?!" in a real mean tone, like I was a kid and forgot my shoes or something. Note: I was the only one in the kiosk, why would I need a mask on?

However, when she is on the floor, all she does is complain and whine over petty things. I have yet to hear any positive comments from her. I have yet to see her do or hear of her doing any -actual- work. I'm glad the other managers aren't like her, they actually work hard. They aren't condescending and don't treat us like children.

She bullies us for little things like checking our cel phones briefly, not even using them( like she accuses us of doing)between customers or accusing us of being on break(you heard that right)when we're sitting at the back desk doing gas invoices. Once we had a meeting with her and she was texting her buddies on her cel phone and not paying attention to us when we suggested something important. Caught her sitting down at the back dock also texting away. Hypocrite. >:(

Seriously she just needs to go, I've been there for more than 10 years and frankly I'm just fed up, and it's not just with what's mentioned here. I've never hated a store manager this much. If there was a way to block manager calls to fuel I'd gladly do it.

All the managers at my store are terrible. Mean, petty, lazy and play favorites. Morale is worse than ever.

The ABSOLUTELY worse manager we had was named Brent. He was all Marine and there is nothing wrong with that, but he was a racist. He disliked anyone that wasnt white. When I was a cc he pulled me from bagging to scrub a vent with a toothbrush because it wasnt clean to his standards. He also:

1. Did personalized write ups for each person that subtly targeted their age, gender etc.

2. Refused to congratulate an asian couple for being "shoppers of the month" during a stupid promotion we were having saying that he "hated chinks." He never went out to greet them.

3. Asked an african american co-worker what kind of 'necktie' would they prefer to wear around their neck, then asked if they wanted some watermelon, grape kool-aid, and fried chicken when they looked bothered.

4. Got mad and said "people of your color are starting to piss me off. You got no sense of humor." When the aforementioned co-worker mentioned in #3 got mad at the aforementioned comment. He then said "who are they going to believe, me or your color."

5. Told a homosexual male co-worker that he shouldnt 'chase dick' and should chase females instead then asked if he was " coming in to me." Homosexual guy responded: "don't flatter yourself. I wouldnt date you if you were the last man on earth." Manager the. "Laid off" homosexual co-worker.

Thankfully this marine manager resigned and returned to military life before the company could fire.him.
