In reading some of these threads, I've noticed that some stores are "Department Managers", in the case of thedude as a department manager who was appointed.
The district that I am in is still a biddable department head job for all except Floral, DSD, and File Maintenance, those are appointed more often than not by seniority. All Department Heads/Backups are still in the union and are paid hourly, except head meat who is paid hourly but can make a higher wage based on sales.
How is it in other districts? Are department heads considered managers and have to give up being in the union? Is it salary or hourly pay? The reason I ask is because our contract is up in October and there has been talk of Kroger trying to push this in our district.

Our contract was just renewed about a year ago if I'm not mistaken. And it's still biddable. I didn't know there was any other way they did it.
mine said MR.CHRIS, which some management diddn't like, but as i told them, i'm 40 years old, been here a decade, i think both ways, iv,e earned a mr on my tag.
They changed most of the titles in almost every district. Department Manager was changed to Department Head. Your name tag and your business cards will still say Department Manager. Look at your information under your express HR, it will say department head. In the case of front end manager, they are now called Head Cashier. Head Deli Clerk. Etc.
In no store in any district unless your working for fred meyers which I'm not aware of, are any department manager/head/cashier/clerk considered management. Kroger Management are Nonunion, hourly, workers. Kroger Management have signed contracts that they can not change jobs for 2 years after training, and they are able to transfer or be relocated to any store in the district. We just had a co manager come out of training, she said her contract stipulated the 2 year job change because they were trainging co managers left and right and within 6 months they were all leaving going to real jobs.
anywoo I ramble. IF there is a store or district out there that they have salary department heads, please post to let me know. Even I have been wrong once.
Hi all, I've been lurking on this board for quite a while, figure I might as well post a reply to something! I've worked for Kroger and Fred Meyer for about 7 years, most as a Seafood Dept. manager. I wonder if I'm the only Freddie's employee that looks in here!
Anyway, in the FredMeyer KMA they consider certain managers as managers, and others not. One different thing is that we do not combine the Deli and service bakery, they are separate completely. The deli and bakery managers are considered non-union management, but are paid hourly. Same with Produce and Nutrition. There is no Dairy manager, the position is called Hanging Deli Section Head, and they do all ordering, etc. for the Perishable Grocery (lunchmeat, eggs, dairy, etc.). Frozen is considered a Section Head. Meat Manager is called "Head Meat Cutter" and is unionized. Seafood is funny. We dont actually exist. You can be a seafood clerk, a journeyman seafood clerk (basically asst. seafood manager) , but when you become manager, you're moved to some special job classification, given a decent raise, etc. But the official position is "Senior Meat Service Counter". Not clerk, just Senior. Haha.
Everyone is considered a manager though, my name tag says Seafood Manager, and i'm unionized. Every department is also accounted for separately in the financials. I think Kroger hasn't completely "Krogerized" FredMeyer, due to it being such a different store (we're basically WalMart, but with better merchandise), and being a previously successful company with its own policies, procedures, etc.
That was an interesting post, Fishy. I work for Wally, and I like how, in their case, nearly EVERYbody is being pushed or coaxed or coerced into becoming some form of 'manager'----dept. manager, dept. lead; zone merchandise supervisor, Master of Bates, what ever. Of course, these are all NON SALARIED positions.....so at Wal-Mart, it's really only like having a tin foil badge and a cap gun. BUT:
This way, Wal-Mart can that much more effectively keep out the UNIONS~~~

I think management is salary instead of hourly, but there are bonuses that they offer as incentive. It used to be based on sales but now I think its all tied into Key Refailing, which is why a lot of the older managers are looking at retirement.
I look for Kroger to ultimately try to push to get department heads out of the union and into a "manager" position. If anything, it gives them the ability to "appoint" a department head instead of somebody with the seniority who would probably screw it up.

yeah, kroger wants to get evrybody to management level, non union, becayuse then, they can do litterally ANYTHING they want to you, and you can't do jack.
kroger would love to see the union gone, even thou it's hardly a factor anymore
The Ralph's KMA in southern CA has only two non union salary members. That would be the Store Director and Co-Manager. All other employees in the store are Union hourly members.
I am a dept head or mgr whichever they call me and I was salary up until about a year and a half ago. We were switched to hourly but still not part of the union.
