nutrition manager salary?

Hello all! I have a question that needs to be brought to your attention. The nutrition manager at my store is retiring soon, and my peers and supervisors say that I am a prime candidate to fill the nutrition manager's position. Now before I take on such a responsibility I want to ask how much does a nutrition manager make on average? I tried asking the nutrition manager and he said not as much as the produce manager but still OK. Keep in mind my store's nutrition department does pretty good. Any helpful answers are much appreciated. Thank you!

Considering that everybody's pay rates are listed in the contract book, I find it strange that he didn't want to tell you.  My contract book lists nothing about a nutrition manager.  The two closest things are floral specialist and salad bar specialist.  The lead floral specialist makes an additional 50 cents per hour provided he/she has completed accredited training as a floral designer and the department makes at least $3000.00 a week in sales.  A floral clerk who has completed training but is not a specialist receives an additional 25 cents per hour.  The salad bar specialist receives an additional 25 cents perhour provided the salad bar makes at least $5000.00 in weekly sales.

OK, this gives me a better view at what I'm looking at. my nutrition department averages between 14,000-20,000. Does that mean the nutrition manager would make a type of commission pay off the sales like the Meat manager and Produce manager would for their departments? smile

Dude, I hate to tell you but Nutrition is under produce. It's not a manager position. It might be classified as a lead position, but your best bet is reading you union contract book. As it is all payrates are in you contract. If you can provide your region we might be able to say what you would be making.

In the Houston area you would make .50 over your top rate of pay if your STORE makes money. $14-20 a week or a year? If your nutrition department is making 14000 a week you would probably get .50 over your top rate in the Houston area.

You need to ask your union steward or someone in store management  exactly how much it pays before you decide.  If it doesn't pay anything more than what you're already making I'd say forget about it and let someone else deal with the headache.

Wow, these are some interesting contracts! Our contract out here in Oregon is way different. It covers Freddies and QFC, and also Albertsons, Safeway, and a few smaller local grocers. There are some non-unionized locations of each chain that aren't included, but probably 75% of all the grocery stores in the Portland/Vancouver area are covered.

We don't get any extra for working in any particular store, regardless of volume. It's quite ridiculous! I get paid the same amount for being Seafood Manager of an extremely high volume store as the Seafood Manager of the slowest store in the region. You'd think I'd get at least something for my trouble, but no dice. Our Meat/Seafood regional has even tried to get extra pay to move experienced/top performers to busy stores, but someone in the company denies it every time. Working in a busier store means you're less bored, and also get to bring in all sorts of product without having to worry as much about shrink, but theres no benefit to it. We don't even get a bonus! There used to be yearly bonuses as high as $1000 on occasion, they've all been removed over the past few years. We dont even get yearly raises anymore from our PED's, other than the contract's yearly raises (we got a whole 25 cents an hour this year, woopdie doo)

I'd take the nutrition manager job, just because you'd be guaranteed 40 hours every week. Also i find the whole "job bidding" procedure thats been mentioned in other posts really funny. We totally dont have that. Lets say 4 people apply for a management spot, you meet with the regional, and store manager for an interview, and they pick whoever they think would do best. Doesnt matter outside of a requirement for being an assistant for at least 6 months.

hi, i also work in the atlanta division!

Its my understanding per our union contract that "lead clerk" positions (floral, nutrition, bakery, starbucks and seafood) are pretty much a +0.50 raise, with the exception of bakery, which usually cap's out at top regular associate pay. Your store manager may be able to change that slightly, but dont expect much more than that. Kroger considers those dept positions as stepping stones to someday getting your own major dept. (meat, produce and deli)
