Kroger “promised” me a job!

Well maybe promised is an overstatement, but anyway here's the story.  We recently learned our store is closing "because the location failed to meet sales expectations," according to a local news article.

I'm not sure what that means, but I DO know it means I'm out of a job.  Well, maybe.  When my manager and a rep from personnel came to tell us they're closing the store, they told us "Everyone will be assured a job."

I'm not sure what THAT means either, but I do know it's hardly possible we could get the same job at the same pay with the same hours (FT/PT) at another Kroger store within a reasonable commute.  There's over a hundred positions to fill from our store, but one can only be so flexible.

The article further states that we "will be offered jobs at other stores in the market."  In the Market?  To me, "in the market" means in the business or industry of selling groceries, which means Kroger would have to find us jobs with their competitors.  Uh-huh.

Anyway, here are my questions.

1.      Has anyone been told their store is closing but was "assured a job"?
2.      Did Kroger actually deliver on their commitment?
3.      If so, how and when was the job "offered" to you?
4.      Did you have a choice among offerings, or was it, "Here ya go - take it or leave it"?
5.      How similar is the job to what you were doing before the store closed?

"In the market" means in your district----which could be huge, and may require you to either move or face a long daily commute.

Ok yea i can help you with this.  I started with Kroger at the Kenwood Location.  It was to be the "Golden Goose" of new wave Kroger stores.  There is a shopping mall across the parking lot and they built a huge store ancoring a new segment to the mall.  Problem was, the developer sorta went bankrupt and walked away from finishing the project.  There was (and still is to this day) a 5 story office complex that never got finished that was to house a lot of strand stores on the first and second floor.

Anyway, after about a year and a half, one day the big brass of Kroger came marching into our store and a page was made for all managers to immediately report to the conference room.  They told them that in 2 weeks the store will close due to lack of expected business.  Several days later, human resource representative came and set up shop. They asked for each and every employee to stop by to see them and to concider 3 store in order of your preference in the district that you would like to transfer to.

I suggest to you to think hard of all th Kroger stores in your area.  Listen to where fellow employees are talking about going to.  Figure out based on what stores you personally like and who is going where - what stores you want to go to.  Go check them out if time allows.  Look at senority at these stores and where you will fit in.  Remember that they might not be happy to have you 'newbies' bust into their clicks.

Face the fact that unfortunately your store is dead and the party there is over.  You will either be moved to another store or you can decide for yourself that it is time to move on.  This is all explained in the union contract.  Kroger sure will not close the store and terminate 100+.  That would be for them and unemployment nightmare.  Just think real hard to where you want to go and hope to hell they put you there.

talk to your union i think you should be able to pick where you want to go as long as you have the seniority to bump the people then they would have to move the other people to other stores. and if your full time you would be over all part timers no matter how long they have been there but follow up with your union

Unfortunately, none of that applies to me.  I'm part time with less than 90 days seniority and haven't joined the union yet in this "right to work" state.

Thanks to all who have responded.  This is one my first posts, so I am not yet familiar with the players or the protocol.

Can anyone add to this discussion - specially the questions at the end?

Thanks!

apply, hope, and look for another job in the meantime. You're bottom man on the totem pole in this situation. literally. Don't depend on Kroger to get you a job. Don't wait.

i would assume they would just offer you a job at another Kroger but since you're not in the union they can just fire you for any reason.

Good luck, friend.
