Mostly, when going about fixing your electrical/gas wiring, make sure you have ALL avalves turned off. I don't care if you have to hold a flash light bar in your teeth, and have a Canary bird in a cage to see if it dies from C0 gas. Just use that monkey wrench to turn off all the heating/cooling appliances. It will get complicated from here...
Your antique home has most likely been re wired time and again, and finding the original source withOUT calling the power compnany will sound better than good.

Well, that's because, as it turned out, there really wasn't any point. Too little sleep and too much work sometimes (for me) = mass confusion for everybody . . .
