Local 400 contract negotiations.

I work at a kroger in the Mid-Atlantic region and hear that the negotiations for our next contract will begin at the end of august.  And in the few meetings so far, Koger has been(according to our union rep) ugly.  Anyone out there heard anything? 

Also if we were to go on strike, could we do any work while the strike is in progress?  For example working for a temp. agency for the duration?

I'm right there with you in the 400. I haven't heard anything about the negotiations but i assume that you couldn't go to work for anyone else while on strike.

I was thinking if worse came to worse about doing some temp. work, which I was doing before I started Kroger.

Well, I'm not too knowledgeable about strike pay.. Maybe someone else can confirm this?

But the Union goes on Strike only as a last resort. They do everything they can to avoid going on strike. In the event that they do go on strike, there is strike pay for striking employees, I think. But it probably isn't much.

The best person to answer these questions would be your union representative. You could call them and ask for an update on the contract and ask them what happens in the event of a strike.

Our union contract took a year to finalize :( That was Negotiations + Voting + Ratification. We did get a lump sum payment for working so long without a contract though. That was nice. I went over a year with no raise. That sucked.

no one ever went on strike so far. they have to stay open or the will lose a ****load of money and businness.

The last union Strike I remember is about 11 years ago in California. Lucky for me, I moved out of state months before that happened.

Kroger knows that part time people won't vote for a strike.  So they make sure that the ratio of part time people to full time people is high enough to keep a strike from happening.

All i got to say is when you go to the meeting to vote "YES " or "NO" be sure you damn well know everything they are laying out on the table.  Cincinnati ratified their contract around october last year.  They gave most employees a lump sum bonus amd no pay raise for over a year.  But alot of employees didnt get a bonus.  Yet they thought they would get one or they didnt understand how much never the less they voted for the new contract only to find out later that they wont be getting a bonus!  they were pissed off but i said to them "WELL WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK AND FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT WAS BEING OFFERED BEFORE YOU VOTED YES YOU MORON!"

kroger doesnt want a strike; the union doesn't want a strike; the majority of employees (the ones living pay check to paycheck) do not want a strike.  the union and kroger will go into these arbitrations and post a short blurb about how things are going yet us employees wont know the real nuts and bolts. 

BE CAREFULL or you'll all be boned up the ass....

The stores in my ares went on strike in 2003, a year before I started with the company.  but in 2007 they rushed a vote to get a contract in but it only benefited longer term employees.  Less than half the people covered under it, got too vote because it was scheduled so quickly

have you  noticed most of the part-timers are kids, no mom is going to let their babies cross a picket line. we need to stay firm, if we sit back and say nothing or do nothing then that is exactly what kroger wants.  we have to stay together on this
