Stupid Cart Rules
Permalink

How many of you hard-working baggers have been through this? We have four rows of carts in our store lobby includin those dumb mini-carts. The stupid rule is that a bagger is to bring in carts six or less per load through the back door, push the rows forward, and don't bother to keep them straight. Their reason for this bulls**t is so the baggers won't strain themselves and get the lot cleared faster.

The problems with this.

Six carts or less: I have to go to a cart corral many times.

Using the back door: Our store has a standard-sized back door wide enough for one cart. Not exactly a fast way here.

Pushing the rows forward and not keeping them straight: This results in nothing but a big mess with the carts colliding together.

So when I would get carts I would first straighten and fill the rows. Then I would haul in cartloads of ten or better. I would use either the front or back doors. This results in the lot cleared in about 45 minutes.

Of course I have been singled out and bitched at several times by my FE manager and one of the co-managers. Normally I wouldn't care but why am I being singled out for working hard and efficient while everybody else gets away with anything and never get so much as a slap on the wrist?

I have done it this way more times than I can count. And I have never gotten severly hurt.

However, one day I was doing a cart shift and sure enough I was yelled at. Well, I had my fill of it so from now on I'm going to do it their way. And I don't care if nothing gets done either.

They don't give you any thing to help handle the carts? Our baggers have a cart lasso (for lack of a better word) that hooks onto the front cart. They can hold onto it when they push to keep the carts from rolling away.

It seems weird to me that they make you bring the carts in through the back door. In all my years and all my stores, I have NEVER seen a store do this. Front door is quickest.

6 has always been the standard. Even when I used to be a bagger, 11 years ago. And people have always ignored it and brought in whatever they could manage.

I will say that as a customer, I hate when people push more than 6 carts across the parking lot and I have to wait on them to go by so I can drive. Because it seems like either they have to wait for people to clear the door so they can go in (which makes me wait while they are out in the street) or they lose control of an end cart because they didn't use their lasso, and have to go chase it. The worst is the Wal Mart parking lot. They have those cart collector machines and when they are out rounding up carts, it's like waiting for a damn train to go by.

Cart pushers are the one group in retail I truly feel sorry for. Whether they work in 40 below zero blizzards, and their breath is crystalizing in their lungs, or 110 above heat indexes, where it's so hot their shoes are literally melting to the asphalt and the heat stroke is just around the corner from yet ANOTHER train wagon of carts needing cleared, these poor bastards simply don't get enough credit.

What I HAVE seen some of them get, is nearly run over by some dick driver behind the wheel of his climate-conditioned sedan.

Give 'em ALL hazard pay, I say~

KUDOS to everything you said, Mundt. I've helped with cart pushing enough times, I know the whole drill....You'll have kuntomers stomp out of the store, pissed cuz they couldn't buy what thy came for-----and take it out on the poor grunts humping their assez on the parking lot! WTF....

And as far as the puke-pot trash out there, yeah, I've encountered that too. Had a CSM (Wally's version of a FES) try to get me to attend to "a MYSTERIOUS PACKAGE in a cart out in the lot"; I was like "NO WAY. Call a salaried manager out to handle what MIGHT be a fuking BOMB, I ain't down wid dat."

All I know is:

In spite of how far I've fallen from The American Dream; no matter how disgraced I've made myself from once being a white collared, corporate prick making over 60K/yr......whatever poor choices I've made, combined with a luckless set of karmic cards and fked up Runes Some One else made for me, and however much more penance I may have to pay before ANY of my current predicament becomes more clear, and I MIGHT get back to some semblance of what my life may have really been meant for, to begin with~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I ain't gettin fukin hurt or killed for ANY God damed job!

And I strongly encourage each and all of you on this board the same wisdom. Amen and Ala-Chunky Peanut Butter.

Agreed. No Job is worth harm to you, physically or mentally. I got reprimanded a lot when I worked days because I did not tolerate customers harassing me verbally. I would give it right back. No amount of money is worth just sitting there and letting people walk all over me. One customer even tried to get me fired for doing so. Didn't work. I wish I could remember some examples of things that happened, but I can't.

Always know your rights, and always stand up for them. Don't let people abuse you.

On an unrelated note, the mention of hazard pay reminded me of something. Get this. My store managers receive hazard pay for managing our store because it is in a bad part of town. Where is my hazard pay as an employee for working there? It's bull****.

That is so true nocturnia. Many thanks to you for posting that.

I can relate to that FedUp. However, I have also heard complaints from customers about the carts being everywhere outside too.

I'm at such a small store there are two cart corralls (they are no more than 100ft. from the building) and it would take me 15 mins if they were both full to get all the carts in. I usually push in 8 to 10 big carts at a time no lasso because it wouldn't reach that long. And then like 4 or 5 small ones at a time, because, as previously stated, they are kind of hard to handle. Carts aren't too much of a problem here.

about those mini carts or carts in general you should always be using the cart strap for safety if you dont know what that is you should ask your store manager not your csm or co managers u should ask your store manager if he does not have an answer for you then ask him or others who your safety champion is for your store if they still have no answer then call your union rep and ask for help...

They said I couldn't use an umbrella, while it was raining... I used an umbrella before while pushing carts. I use both hands still but tonight my store manager said I couldn't? is there a rule saying " car pushers can't use an umbrella "?

Any cart pusher who uses the safety straps AND brings in 6 or less is guaranteed to have a hard time filling the lobby. If I don't use a strap, I try to pull in 6. If I get a strap that actually works, I will try to push 9 or 10 in. I've since been promoted, but sometimes they need me out there whenever the courtesy clerks call in sick for whatever reason. Understand though, that if the lobby is empty of carts, people will just shop somewhere else. Less sales = less hours for everyone.

My store has a problem grasping this concept. Every rush hour, every Friday/Sat/Sunday we're out of carts....

My division uses a ratcheting cart strap that pulls the carts together and has hooks on both ends; one for the front cart, one for the back cart. It's pretty awesome. Leaves both hands free to steer and push. I've seen it in the supply lists for other divisions so I know it's not only available to mine, so maybe you guys can get your mgrs to order some. Safety papers here also say no more than 6 carts, but the cart strap papers say 8 max and you can just barely fit 10 if you let it out all the way.

Anyone who uses a cart strap is weak... I push trains on trains. That's how you fill the lobby **** the strap and **** the vest
