If an employee wants to transfer to another department or another store can management say no? I want to transfer out of the deli but have told I'm too valuable an employee. So in other words, I'm being penalized for being a good worker?
The reason I want to transfer is because the new deli manager has completely rearranged the schedule. Her store must be a lot smaller than the one I work at because she's got me scheduled to do things that normally take two people to do. I've worked in the bakery department in the same store for almost 18 years (I've been with Kroger for 22). I've always done the frozen food order and I always do the breakout. On days I bake bread I have to make the donuts and pull the outdates too. On the days I don't bake I bag bread. The bread, whether I'm baking or bagging, plus the other two jobs takes a full 8 hours. I have to go at full speed all day. I'm lucky if I get my last break. The new deli manager expects us to be able to do the bread and wants us to put out premade stuff like pudding cakes or pita bread too. I'm telling you it's impossible. The backup, who's worked there several years, has told her that it can't be done.
She also wants the bread to be completely done by 10:00 am. So she has us coming in in the middle of the night. I know a lot of Kroger bakeries bake at night but we've always baked during the day. The former manager did it that way because we have so few people she didn't want the bakery to be understaffed in the afternoons when customers were in the store. I've worked night work before and I swore I'd never do it again. I just need something a little less stressful. Before this I knew my job, I did it well, and I liked it. Now, I dread going into work.
just keep on doing your job like you were before she arrived. make sure you take both breaks no matter what. do not speed up because she has added her extra work load onto your shoulders. just do your 7 1/2 hours of work and let the bakery world around you evolve however it does.

The biggest problem, besides the extra workload, is I don't want to work in the middle of the night. I've done it before and you never get enough sleep, especially if you live in a full household.
then simply refuse to work that shift! tell them politely that you are unwilling to work at 3am in the morning for the reasons you mentioned. she isnt looking at you to do the shift is she / what about her working that shift?
i do not think they are able to require you to come in to work during abnormal hours. usually these are business hours from 6am to midnight. just try to lurch yourself in the rear and let the crap settle. soon she will realize her unrealistic ways. the previous manager did things in a particular way b/c she figured out over time the best way to accomplish the bakery jobs with what she has. the same will hold true w/ this manager. she needs to stir the pot up some and figure out what works and what doesnt work.

I think that given these details, you may have enough of a case for the union to work with you in getting you either set to daytime deli hours, or switched to a different department or to a different store.
I will point out that if you have restrictions on your schedule, they are not required to give you any hours at all. "I cannot work overnight." "Sorry no hours."
BUT
I think that you can present a case for this as "I have worked for (insert years here) years during daytime hours. I am not available to work overnights. I need to stay on a daytime shift and I am willing to swap departments or stores to do so."
Have you spoken with your store manager about this?
I will let you know of a little detail ... They cannot fire you for working too slowly. So if you work and you cannot get done everything that this deli manager is asking you to do, then they cannot fire you for it. They will instead move you out of the department. Worst they can do is make you a bagger.
So if you cannot get them to move you like you want.. I say just give it some time. Either she will see how wrong she is, and change things, or she will move you out of her department.
How big is your deli? How many employees? How many 4 sided tables to fill?
i tried transfering dept, stores, all got blocked. kroger knew, if they kept me were i was sooner or latter i would make a mistake, and when i did they pounced, fireing me. union was no help getting my job back.
seriously, i wouls line up a temp job, quit kroger, wait out the rehire time, and then get rehired at the kroger you want to be in.
tring to wait it out, and hope they back off, was always my stratagy, but it failed.
if they won't transfer you, they have a ulterior motive, the we can't loose you, is old excuse, and false. they would rather you quit, or get canned ?
