If they need you to work 5 days then they can schedule you to work 5 days. It doesn't hurt to ask though. Anything over 32 hours however during a holiday week is overtime. Our zone manager says we have to have 3 days off during a holiday. He doesn't like overtime. Because of that, Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a bit of a nightmare. Before we got the zone manager we have now I can remember working 6 days during Thanksgiving week.
I think it is a seniority thing.. Higher seniority gets the day off.. Lower has t o work it.. But you get paid more for working it.. Most managers will maintain a signup sheet for people willing to work the holiday... The trick there is that they still get paid for the holiday, but they do not get paid OT or Extra for working the holiday.. Then anyone who doesn't sign the paper, isn't allowed to work that day.
My store manager hates my Department because no one in my department will agree to sign his stupid paper and give away our extra pay. He has been quoted as saying "Nobody in the Deli really cares about the Deli, because nobody is willing to work during the holiday." We're willing to work. We just aren't willing to do it for less pay, you bastard. So.. Some people get it and some people dont.
Ihave second seniority slot in my department so if I get scheduled to work on holidays, I will exert my seniority for the day off.
