Cell Phones Part II
Permalink

I posted awhile back about certain cell phone stories.

Here is a new one going on at my store:

We got a new manager about three months ago.  Very nice older man, but an absolute idiot.  I noticed a couple days after he started that his wife would call on his cell phone and he would answer it on the floor, oblivious to other employees or customers who might be watching.

Saturday night I worked on the front end for the first time in a long time and there has been a noticeable trickle down effect.  The front end people are texting and it is painfully more obvious.

I was on the phone last night with a friend of mine who is a shop steward who works at the same store.  I mentioned it to him and how the new manager is on his cell phone on the floor.  He told me that the co-manager had written up somebody for using their cell phone on the clock and was waiting for the next time the manager was on his cell phone to take a picture and forward it to the union rep.

Basically, what's fair for one is fair for all.

i have personally taken cell phones from a couple of employees since I hired on.
Can't stock shelves while you're texting.

Stop stealing my cell, James. I'm going to file harassment on you. Police will be called.

 Depends on the context IMO.

I work in the meat department and if I am off the floor and caught up, I might check for text messages.  My phone stays on silent.  Our head meat cutter had his cell phone taken away from him by a manager who walked up on him after his daughter called.  The backup head meat cutter's exact words to me was "I don't give a **** if you text.  Just get your work done, don't do it on the floor, and if management catches you, you're on your own."

OTOH, I had a cashier that I was training who would duck under the register and text when there wasn't any customers around.  When I threatened to spray him with the spray bottle (jokingly) if I saw him texting again, his answer was "You're not going to be gay like that are you?"  He didn't last long.

If I am off the floor and caught up enough, I don't mind checking my cell phone for messages.  I would be more likely to offer to take my cell phone out to my car rather than hand it over to management if a big enough deal was made over it.  It's one thing if its the cheapy phones but an iPhone or Droid I would be leery about handing over.

so many people with things to hide LMAO.

I keep my phone on my person all the time, BUT I'm not one of those texting 24/7.  I have whipped out my phone to let a customer use the calculator on occasion as well as call their wife/husband about a question on something.  Heck I've googled things for customers so they can know what it is their spouse put on the shopping list.  It is a handy tool to help the older customer who may not have a phone on them.  We also use cells to text/call people in to work
