What is the boundry of leaving the store unattended?

I am the receiver for my store and have been having problems with nite crew leaving early.  The leaving early part I really have no problem with, it is just when they are punching out before I punch in for shift or they are leaving me in the store by myself.  I was always told that we have to have at least two people in the store at all times, in case soemthing happens.  My management is not sure about this either as I discussed this with him recently.  Can anyone help me out with this?

You have a different definition of on duty then they do. On 3rds the Head Grocery or Night Crew Leader is the acting night manager. The store managers are always on call in case of an emergency, so they're sort of on duty as well. Your problem is a simple scheduling issue. Get with the store manager or Head Grocery (who ever writes your schedule) and make sure that the PIC(person in charge) is scheduled and works his or her schedule.

In case you are curious:
Yes the head grocery is supposed to work 3rds. All stores are supposed to have an appointed night crew leader. In the event of a call off, the stocker with most seniority is the PIC for that night.

yep, and they know it too, but don't wanna deal with it.

almost AYWHERE, be it grocery, fast food, gas station, requires two people on site. gas stations cheat, but thats also why they got robbed all the time.

It's just a matter of safety.

yes all the above is pretty much correct. i would refuse to enter the premises until there are two people present. one should be a manager who should walk the store to make sure it is safe to enter.  just hold your ground and do not go inside.  then give them a note of the time you stood outside waiting.  that should get the poin across pretty fast

Original poster replying, I work for a store in michigan, and we do not have a head night stocker that works overnight he works the 1230 to 9 because he got the job over some other guy and there is a whole union issue going on with that.  We are just having so many problems with our night crew its not funny anymore, like if they get yelled at they pretty much do not work.  They do not do backstock, "not our job" is what I am told, that is why I am scheduled a 12 to 830am every thursday to do the backstock carts, and their conditioning sucks.
