So I recently marked that I was unavailable for certain days of the week, due to the fact that I'm going to college full time and need time to study and get my work done. I'm marked as unavailable on Mondays, and I was fine last week. But this week, I was marked as working today (Labor day).
I asked everyone I knew who worked the front end with me, including many floor supervisors that I was good friends with. They told me that our schedule writer had to manually override my unavailabilityin order to mark me down for the holiday. She did not ask me about this, and was upset when I said I wouldn't be able to work that day.
When I asked the schedule writer, who is also a floor supervisor, she told me that I have to request holidays off in advance, even if I'm marked as unavailable... but only her and the manager that wrote me up for calling in today say that. I tried checking my handbook, but I couldn't find out where it was covered. Is it true that I have to request holidays off even if I'm marked as unavailable, or is this manager covering our schedule writers ass (which has happened multiple times before, because she's a retarded bitch who can't admit she's wrong)?
Wow, your situation sounds just like mine. I can't work Mondays yet today I was scheduled to work. That's never happened to me before, usually when I'm unavailable on a holiday, they don't schedule me. When I told the floor manager about it, she said "well, I just assumed you didn't have school today so I went ahead and marked you in."
Unavailability only comes into play only if you are actually unavailable. Sure, you had to be overwritten into the computer, but they did nothing wrong by scheduling you a day that you are actually available even if it was contrary to your prior availability.
You were unavailable due to school, there was no school. They needed you to work so they put you on the schedule.
Sorry, bud.

Original Poster here. I assumed that's what she did, but it's still messed up that she didn't even call to verify. And I am going to ask to see where it is in the handbook. If they refuse to show me or make up an excuse, should I politely ask to speak with my union representitive, or should I just begrudgingly accept the bogus write up and shuffle on back to work?

I was actually unavailable though. because I still have schoolwork to do, even if there is no school. I don't have many hours of school, but I'm a full time student, I need a lot of hours to do the coursework.

Then you should be doing your schoolwork instead of complaining on the internet :P
You can't truely think I believe that you were going to spend all today doing homwork, do you? I'm not here to judge you but I know that I wouldn't spend an entire holiday just doing homework.
There is time before work and time after work for that stuff. Just pretend that work is your school for today. 'Cause for the most part it really is.

It's not that I need the whole day, it's that the hours they scheduled me for would prevent me from doing my homework. Plus with my family, I have a great deal of responsiblities I have to take care of, and me staying home on mondays is one of the few ways I can do that.
Under our contract out here in Portland, holiday pay is pretty nice. Full timers get 8 hours of free normal pay, prorated down for less than full-time. So you can either take 3 days off and get full pay for the week, or work 40 and get 8 free hours added in. Also working on holiday is overtime. So for labor day week I will get a rather nice check!
